Finland becomes NATO’s 31st member… Turkiye’s final confirmation

Finland, which shares a 1,300 km border with Russia, will finally become an official member of NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The admission process was completed with the consent of Hungary and Turkey, which opposed joining Finland.

“The Turkish parliament congratulates Finland and its people (on joining NATO).”

Turkish Parliament approves Finland’s NATO membership.

In order to join NATO, the consent of all 30 member states was required.

Following Hungary, which had been opposing Finland’s NATO membership until the end, and Turkey’s consent, Finland met all the requirements to become an official member.

Finland is expected to eventually join NATO after going through some technical procedures.

As early as next week, the Finnish flag will also be raised on the flagpole at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.

“Finland will officially become a NATO member in the coming days. It will make Finland safer and NATO stronger.”

After Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year, Finland abandoned its longstanding line of military non-alignment and applied for NATO membership.

However, Sweden, which has applied for NATO membership along with Finland, has not yet received permission from Turkey and Hungary.

Stoltenberg emphasized that the aim is to ensure that Sweden’s ratification is also completed before the NATO summit in July.

If Finland joins Sweden, Russia’s borders with NATO allies will be doubled.
