Facebook, the world’s largest social media, has changed its name and has undergone a major image change.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled a new company logo in the shape of the mathematical symbol (∞) for infinity, announcing that the company is changing its name to ‘meta’.
“To reflect who we are and what we do, we are proud to announce that from this moment on, our company name is ‘Meta.’ Our mission to bring people together remains unchanged.”
While maintaining the company’s signage applications such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, it falls under the giant umbrella of meta.
The metaverse is a three-dimensional virtual world fused with the real world, and as an extension of the real world, it means a digital space where various activities take place.
Zuckerberg has long promised to build a metaverse where people can freely cross boundaries by mixing online and virtual reality, emphasizing that the metaverse is the next major social platform.
In fact, Zuckerberg also showed off his digital avatar with the announcement of the name change.
Facebook’s name change is also interpreted as an attempt to distance itself from the criticism raised by the whistleblower’s revelations.
After a recent whistleblower that Facebook neglected to make hate speech to increase the number of users, 17 US media companies are jointly publishing articles criticizing Facebook like a carpet bombing.
In addition, as the US Federal Trade Commission launched an investigation into Facebook’s internal documents, Facebook is facing its biggest crisis since its inception.
