U.S. and China clash over Korea’s NATO meeting… “Allies” vs “That’s the North Atlantic”

The United States and China clashed over the issue of the NATO summit and the NATO summit between South Korea and Japan.

When China said it opposes the participation of these countries in the summit, the United States refuted it head-on, saying that China had no veto power.

This is a report by Correspondent Jinbang Kim in Beijing.

The NATO Summit will be held in Madrid, Spain from the 29th to the 30th.

Leaders of Indo-Pacific countries such as South Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, which are not NATO members, have also agreed to attend this meeting.

In particular, this is the first time the leaders of South Korea and Japan have participated in a NATO meeting.

However, the United States and China clashed over the issue of attending the summit between the two leaders.

First, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Wang Won-bin expressed displeasure at the regular briefing, saying, “The Asia-Pacific region does not geographically belong to the North Atlantic.”

“The Asia-Pacific region is not a geographical category of the North Atlantic. The countries and peoples of the Asia-Pacific region resolutely oppose any word or action that invites military groups to incite division and opposition.”

After the details of the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson’s remarks became known, the White House asked about the US position on the matter. I hit it.

“This meeting is not about the Asian version of NATO,” said Kirby, communications coordinator.

Korea knows this better than any other country, so it’s important that Korea will participate in that meeting,” he said, re-emphasizing that this meeting is not meant to create something similar to NATO in the Pacific.

On the other hand, when asked if a South Korea-U.S.-Japan summit would be held during the meeting, Coordinator Kirby said, “President Biden sincerely hopes for greater trilateral cooperation between the United States and the two allies.”
