Youth is not necessarily “perfect”, let alone youth films – China Daily

Youth films have also become the subject of the widest audience because they show a period that everyone will go through. Those who are young and young feel the resonance, and some people are looking back on the past. Whether it’s pain, sentimentality, or beauty, it’s a time that used to shine brightly.

The youth films of 2022 have not yet reached the level of blowout, but so far, they occupy an absolutely dominant position in front of the big screen. However, domestic youth films may not be as satisfactory.

The earliest outbreak of youth films came from the 2013 “To the Youth That Will Die”, with an investment cost of nearly 60 million yuan and a box office score of over 700 million yuan. Not only did Yang Zishan become popular, but also youth films began to appear together in the next few years. Among them, there are many works of good quality, such as “The Year in a Hurry” directed by Zhang Yibai, which tells a ten-year youth story of a group of young people born in the 1980s from entering middle school to graduating from college. The melody of the theme song sung by Faye Wong is believed to be hummed by many audiences.

It can be said that the period from 2013 to 2017 was the peak period for the development of youth films. After that, the themes of the same type were overwhelming, which has gradually made the audience feel fatigued. After experiencing the meaningless “pain” of dog-blood romance and divorced from reality, in recent years, youth films have extended their themes to a wider range. There are “Youth of You” that focuses on school violence, youth growth is related to the original family “My Sister”, which is no longer nostalgic and expresses the current “Midsummer Future”, etc. Youth films have gone through a process from single to diverse, and their creations have become more relaxed and innovative. However, there are not many youth films that are not recognized.

On Valentine’s Day, “One Taste of Ten Years Wen Ruyan” scored only 2.8 points on Douban. The lightness of the film market this year is obvious, including Qingming and May Day, many films have been withdrawn one after another. The youth film “I Really Hate Long-distance Relationships” that chooses to stick to the May 1st grade, the slogan released before the release is “You stick to love, we stick to movies”. The subject of long-distance relationship is not absolutely universal, but graduation will inevitably face different things, which can indeed touch the hearts of many audiences. The film currently has a box office of 164 million yuan, and its reputation is worrying. The Douban score is 4.6. The audience generally believes that “the actors’ acting skills still need to be polished, and the film’s emotions are too weak.”

During the Dragon Boat Festival, the main films we can see in the theaters are still the youth films “Secret Love, Orange Born in Huainan” and “After I Met You”. As the highest box office winner of the Dragon Boat Festival, the Douban score of “Secret Love, Orange Born in Huainan” is also only Go to 4.6. It’s really hard to say what the box office and reputation of the next youth movies will be.

In youth, everyone has different experiences and feelings, and it is not easy to get too much resonance. To make a good youth film, you need a unique vision and concept. In the face of the summer files of youth films that come together, who can stand out has to be carefully observed. (Nie Qing)
