(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Seul-gi and Hong Jun-seok = A mother who had lost a child to the Russian invasion cried out, “Who will return my children?” Her little one hugged her lap and said, “I don’t want to die. I want the war to end soon” (in a video of Mariupol released by President Zelensky).

On the afternoon of the 11th, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gave a video address to the National Assembly, revealing the dire reality of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

He appeared in a military green T-shirt on a screen broadcast in the auditorium of the National Assembly Library. He looked tired as if he hadn’t shaved his beard for days.

In a speech that lasted about 17 minutes, President Zelensky conveyed the ruthlessness of Russia that invaded his country and the horrors of war, appealing to the international community, including Korea, for help.

Gestures were also included, such as clenching fists and lightly hitting the desk with a serious expression throughout.

The video of Mariupol, a port city in southern Ukraine, released at the end of his speech made the hall even more sober.

In the video, the city of Mariupol appeared to have been devastated by a Russian attack. Ukrainians cried with blood-soaked bodies. Despite the medical staff’s efforts to restore her heartbeat, her child’s hand was already slumped.

President Zelensky said, “The video was filmed by a reporter who stayed in Mariupol for more than a week. Ukrainians have been witnessing these scenes every day for 48 days. I would appreciate it if you watch the video so that you don’t receive it.”

After the video, President Zelensky concluded the video speech by saying, “This is what Russia is doing. We ask that you help us and support us. Thank you.”

The interpreter who delivered this passage also wept.

When President Zelensky’s speech and the video showing the horrors of war were screened, applause erupted in the hall, where even breathing could not be heard from beginning to end.

President Zelensky also mentioned the Korean War in his speech that day. In his previous speeches to Britain, Italy, the United States, and Germany, President Zelensky drew attention with his ‘customized speech’ that appropriately discusses the historical backgrounds of each country.

In his speech at the National Assembly on the same day, he said, “We saw a lot of such destruction in the 20th century. Fellow Koreans, there was one war in the 1950s, and a lot of civilians lost their lives,” he said. It helped,” he said.

He also said, “I am grateful for the help from the Korean government. But we need more help to survive and win the war with Russia,” he said, requesting arms support to fight Russia.

About 50 lawmakers, including ruling and opposition leaders, attended the speech, including Lee Kwang-jae, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly, Park Hong-geun, floor leader of the Democratic Party, Kwon Seong-dong, floor leader of the People’s Power, and Bae Jin-kyo, floor leader of the Justice Party. The camera screen captured the empty space in the auditorium of the National Assembly Library. Unlike speeches in other countries, there was no standing ovation.

Chairman Lee Kwang-jae introduced President Zelensky, saying, “I gave video speeches to 23 countries and international organizations. If there is one message from war, it is that any war must be stopped.”

Park Hong-geun, floor leader, said, “The Korean National Assembly has no separate opposition and opposition in the hope of peace. The National Assembly will also work together for peace in Ukraine.”

Floor Leader Kwon Seong-dong said, “Korea has suffered from the Korean War, so it is very well aware of the tragedy that war brings.” “The South and the North are still facing each other in halves, and North Korea is threatening the safety of the Republic of Korea with its advanced nuclear missiles. However, the Ukraine crisis cannot be viewed only as a story from a distant country,” he said.

Bae Jin-kyo, the floor leader, also raised his voice, saying, “The Justice Party, together with the citizens of the Republic of Korea who oppose war, firmly opposes inhumane war and strongly condemns Russia’s aggression, which is causing global tension and conflict.”

Democratic Party lawmaker Lee Yong-bin, who is located in the Goryeo-in district, said that he and Lee Kwang-jae toured a Ukrainian refugee camp in Poland. Rep. Lee also cried, saying, “The plight of refugees following the war felt like a repeat of forced migration for all Koreans in Ukraine, so tears were pouring out of control.”
