Zmini Island soldier who refused to surrender to Russia receives a medal after release

A border guard on Zmini Island, Ukraine, who became a hot topic for refusing to ‘shut it off’ in response to the Russian military’s demand for surrender, was taken prisoner by the Russian army and was released after being freed and awarded the Order of Ukraine.

The British Guardian reports that the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense awarded the medal to Roman Hribow, a border guard on Zmini Island.

Roman Hrybow was a soldier who served in territorial water defense on the small island of Zmini, 48 km south of mainland Ukraine during the early days of the Russian invasion.

Zmini Island was attacked on the 24th of last month, the first day of the Russian invasion. At the time, the Russian army demanded surrender, but Ukrainian border guards responded with abusive language and refused to surrender. As the contents of this conversation were reported in foreign media, the resistance of the border guards of Zmini Island became a hot topic.

Initially, it was known that the border guard of Zmini Island was annihilated by a Russian attack, but it was later reported that they were captured by the Russian army. Ukrainian President Zelensky said that some of them were captured alive and some were dead.
