Credit Card Rewards Race Heats Up: Amex and Chase Plan Revamps

Updated June 16,2025
‍

The competition in the premium credit card market is intensifying as American Express ⁣and JPMorgan Chase prepare to overhaul their flagship⁢ cards. JPMorgan Chase announced last week that its sapphire Reserve card, initially launched in⁢ 2016,will soon receive a⁣ refresh.

American Express responded Monday, revealing plans for “major” updates to its consumer and business Platinum cards later this year. The company, based in New york, described the‍ investment as its largest⁣ ever in a card refresh.

Howard Grosfield, president of U.S.Consumer Services at American Express, saeid‍ the company will focus on popular features while introducing new benefits that “far, far, far exceed the annual fee.” The revamped Platinum card, expected to launch in the fall, will emphasize lounges, dining, and events.

American Express pioneered the premium credit card concept, linking airline and hotel perks with access to its exclusive airport lounge network. JPMorgan Chase disrupted the market in 2016 with the Sapphire card, offering ample sign-up bonuses and incentives.

Industry experts anticipate that both companies will expand their offerings in travel, dining, and experiences, potentially increasing annual fees. The American Express Platinum card currently carries a $695 annual fee, while the Chase Sapphire ‌Reserve charges $550.

Online forums have speculated that JPMorgan chase might raise the Sapphire Reserve’s annual fee to ⁤$795. A JPMorgan Chase spokesperson declined to comment on the ⁢rumors.

What’s next

Consumers can anticipate richer rewards programs and potentially higher annual fees as American Express and JPMorgan Chase ⁣vie for dominance in the premium credit card market. The focus will likely remain on travel, dining, and exclusive experiences.
