Hamburg “Astra St. Pauli Brauerei” ist insolvent – T-Online

Astra Brauerei St. Pauli GmbH, the operator of the brewery and restaurant located at Nobistor in Hamburg’s St. Pauli district, has filed for insolvency. The company is currently navigating court-supervised proceedings to determine its future viability.

According to a notice from the Hamburg District Court (Amtsgericht Hamburg), insolvency proceedings were officially opened for the company on May 1, 2026. The court has ordered a process of self-administration, known as Eigenverwaltung, which allows the company to attempt to stabilize its own economic situation during the proceedings.

As part of the legal process, the court has appointed Matthias Wolgast, a lawyer from the Hamburg-based law firm Münzel & Böhm, to serve as the trustee (Sachwalter).

Despite the legal filing, the brewery and its attached restaurant continue to operate for the time being. Representatives of the operating company and the trustee have not yet provided detailed statements regarding the specific backgrounds or causes of the insolvency.

Corporate Structure and Brand Partnership

The insolvency of the Astra St. Pauli Brauerei involves a complex relationship with the larger brewing industry. While the Astra and Holsten brands are owned by the Danish brewery group Carlsberg, the Nobistor location operated under a different corporate structure.

In response to inquiries, Carlsberg clarified that the Astra St. Pauli Brauerei was an independent company and had never directly belonged to the Carlsberg group. The group stated that the two maintained a close partnership, specifically regarding the use of the Astra brand.

The goal of this partnership was to make the Astra brand experiential within the St. Pauli neighborhood and to facilitate the development of new product ideas.

Historical Context and Local Significance

The brewery at Nobistor opened in 2018 and was viewed as a symbolic return of the Astra brand to the St. Pauli district. For decades, Astra had been brewed in the former Bavaria brewery in St. Pauli before production was eventually moved to Hausbruch by 2002.

The Nobistor site served as a hub for both production and hospitality, offering a variety of specialty beers. In addition to the standard Astra Urtyp, the restaurant’s menu featured specialized creations including Luden Lager and a dark beer named Nachtschicht.

The establishment also focused on local milestones, having introduced a beer called Reep Royal to coincide with celebrations for the 400th anniversary of the Reeperbahn.
