Market after market is getting frozen right now and that’s killing stocks, CNBC’s Jim Cramer said Wednesday, warning investors not to abandon their positions despite high interest rates, geopolitical tensions, and political gridlock weighing across industries. While sectors from housing to investment banking face severe sluggishness, Cramer argued that the current headwinds could rapidly reverse into tailwinds if economic conditions begin to thaw.
High Mortgage Rates Depress Home Sales
The U.S. housing market remains mired in a multiyear period of sluggishness driven by high borrowing costs. The 30-year mortgage rate has climbed to roughly 7.5%, up from about 3% five years ago, leaving many current homeowners locked into cheaper mortgages and reluctant to move.
The nearly 7.5% mortgage has made housing the least affordable it’s been in 40 years, Cramer said, as reported by CNBC. This affordability crisis has depressed home sales and weighed heavily on housing-related equities. Homebuilders Lennar and KB Home alongside retailers Home Depot and Lowe’s all hit fresh 52-week lows on Wednesday, while appliance maker Whirlpool similarly dropped to a 52-week low as fewer property transactions reduced spending on furniture and renovations.
Postponed IPOs Hit Investment Bank Shares
Once-booming capital markets are also showing pronounced signs of slowing down activity. Cramer pointed to smart ring maker Oura postponing its planned $2.2 billion initial public offering, alongside Inspire Brands shelving its own market offering.
Major Wall Street investment banks have felt the impact of this frozen dealmaking environment. Shares of both Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs declined roughly 12% in the month of September after setting their highs for the year in July. Without IPOs or M&A, the huge banking cohort is frozen except for fees, Cramer said, adding that such revenue streams are simply not good enough to sustain prior momentum.
Political Concerns Threaten Data Center Development
Even the booming data-center industry is facing fresh hurdles as political concerns regarding electricity costs and environmental impacts threaten to slow development. The stakes for these infrastructure bottlenecks are heightened by the ongoing midterm election year, with both Democrats and Republicans fiercely vying for control of Congress. Political opposition to high-demand infrastructure projects continues to compound the difficulties faced by tech and energy developers.
Catalysts For A Potential Market Rally
Despite the widespread freezing of economic activity, Cramer cautioned investors against exiting the market entirely because current headwinds can quickly turn into tailwinds. A resolution to ongoing geopolitical conflicts could push oil prices and inflation lower, potentially prompting the Federal Reserve to remove further interest rate hikes from consideration and unleashing a powerful stock rally.
It could happen in three quick days, perhaps the three most important days of 2026. That’s why I hesitate to leave the market at this moment.
