Nio Deepens Partnership with McLaren, Supplying Battery Packs

Nio Inc. Is now directly supplying battery packs to British supercar manufacturer McLaren, according to a statement from Nio founder, chairman, and CEO William Li on Saturday. This development marks a significant escalation of a partnership initially confirmed in September 2025, and underscores the growing collaboration between the two automakers under a new ownership structure.

Li revealed the ongoing supply arrangement during a user event in Wuhan, Hubei province, but provided no specific details regarding the volume or terms of the agreement. However, reporting from June 2025 indicated that Nio would be developing power batteries specifically for McLaren’s hybrid models. These initial battery packs are expected to have a capacity of around 10 kWh, reflecting McLaren’s focus on hybrid performance rather than full electrification.

The deepening ties between Nio and McLaren are particularly noteworthy given their shared backing by L’imad Holding, a recently formed Abu Dhabi state holding company. In January 2026, Abu Dhabi consolidated its stakes in both Nio and McLaren, previously held by CYVN Holdings, into L’imad. This move aims to streamline investment management and signals a long-term commitment to both companies. L’imad currently holds a 17.9% stake in Nio, and is wholly owned by the Abu Dhabi government.

This collaboration isn’t simply a financial alignment; it represents a strategic technical partnership. McLaren completed its acquisition by CYVN in April 2025 with the understanding that it would receive electrification support from Nio. The current battery supply agreement is a direct result of that initial commitment. Nio’s expertise in battery technology, particularly its self-developed 4680 large cylindrical battery cells, is proving valuable to McLaren as it transitions towards hybrid powertrains.

Nio’s approach to user engagement, exemplified by events like the one in Wuhan, has facilitated the open sharing of business information. The company frequently uses these events to communicate directly with its customer base, fostering a sense of community and transparency. This direct communication was the venue for Li’s confirmation of the battery supply deal.

Looking ahead, the success of this partnership will likely hinge on Nio’s ability to scale production of its 4680 battery cells to meet McLaren’s needs. Nio is also actively developing solid-state battery technology at a new Shanghai facility, suggesting a potential future upgrade path for McLaren’s hybrid vehicles. Investors will be watching closely to see how this collaboration impacts both companies’ financial performance and technological advancements in the evolving automotive landscape.
