Latvian beach volleyball duo Mārtiņš Pļaviņš and Kristiāns Fokerots have demonstrated significant resilience and competitiveness during the 2025 Beach Pro Tour (BPT) Elite 16 circuit, highlighted by a deep run in Brazil and a final appearance in the season’s closing event.

Success in Itapemirim

In the final Elite 16 tournament of the season held in Itapemirim, Brazil, Pļaviņš and Fokerots reached the final after a series of challenging matches. The duo, seeded second in the tournament, secured their place in the championship match by defeating the favorites, Brazilians Evandra Oliveira and Artur Lança, with a score of 2-1 (15:21, 30:28, 15:10).

The semifinal match was particularly intense, as the Latvian pair managed to save six match points in the second set to prevent the Brazilians from advancing.

Their path to the final included several key victories:

  • In group play, they defeated Polish players Piotr Kantor and Filip Lejava 2-1 (21:18, 18:21, 17:15).
  • They beat Austrians Alexander Horst and Moritz Prüstau-Telsnig 2-0 (21:16, 21:14), finishing as group winners.
  • After a loss in the second round of the play-offs, they entered the quarterfinals as lucky losers.
  • In the quarterfinals, they defeated Chileans Marco and Esteban Grimaltوس 2-0 (21:18, 24:22).

The final match was scheduled for December 7, 2025, at 22:00 Latvian time, where they faced the French duo of Eloïsa Schuch-Barbes and Zoé Gardoke.

Performance in Rio de Janeiro

Earlier in the season, Pļaviņš and Fokerots competed in the Rio de Janeiro Elite 16 tournament, where they again navigated a complex bracket to reach the semifinals. Seeded fourth in that event, the Latvians defeated the American pair of Miles Evans and Chase Badingers—the latter being an athlete of Latvian descent—with a 2-0 victory (21:14, 25:23) in the quarterfinals.

Performance in Rio de Janeiro

The statistical breakdown of the quarterfinal victory showed Latvian dominance in key areas. Pļaviņš scored 21 points, including 17 from attack, two from serves, and two from blocks. Fokerots contributed 17 points, with 13 coming from attack, three from blocks, and one from a serve. The pair outperformed the Americans in attack (30:25), blocking (5:2), and serving (3:0).

The road to the Rio semifinals was not linear. In the round of 16, Pļaviņš and Fokerots lost 1-2 (21:15, 17:21, 12:15) to the Qatari duo of Ahmed Tidjane and Sharif Youness. However, they were able to advance to the quarterfinals as lucky losers.

Prior to the knockout stages in Rio, the duo dominated Group D. They defeated Germans Jonas and Benedikt Zagšteter (seeded 21st) 2-0 (21:18, 21:16) and secured the top spot in the group by beating Australians Mark Nicolaidou and Isaac Karaher (seeded 9th) 2-0 (21:11, 21:19).

Tournament Context and Rankings

The Elite 16 events represent the highest tier of the Pro Beach Tour ranking, followed by Challenge and Futures events. By reaching the semifinals in Rio de Janeiro, Pļaviņš and Fokerots earned 900 world ranking points.

The duo’s consistency in Brazil, characterized by their ability to recover from losses as lucky losers and defeat higher-seeded opponents, established them as a formidable force in the professional circuit throughout 2025.
