Megan Jo Knight, 43, of Montrose, pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of insurance fraud on April 6, 2026, in Randolph County Magistrate Court. The plea agreement resolved three felony charges stemming from allegations that Knight committed insurance fraud on three separate occasions beginning in 2022.

Magistrate Tracy Harper sentenced Knight to one year in jail, which was suspended in favor of two years of unsupervised probation. Knight was also ordered to pay a $200 fine.

Court-Ordered Restitution

As a condition of her probation, the court mandated that Knight provide restitution to two insurance providers. Knight is required to pay a remaining balance of $800.34 to All State Insurance and $1,325.40 to Progressive Insurance through the Magistrate Court.

Court-Ordered Restitution

Knight was represented during the proceedings by attorney James Hawkins, while Assistant Randolph County Prosecutor Leckta Poling represented the state.

Details of Fraud Allegations

The charges were based on criminal complaints filed by Special Agent John A. Wyatt of the West Virginia Offices of the Insurance Commissioner Special Investigations Division. The complaints detailed multiple attempts to deceive insurance companies regarding the timing and validity of coverage.

In the first instance, investigators alleged that on December 18, 2022, Knight backed into another individual’s vehicle in her driveway. Although the vehicle Knight was operating had not been added to her Geico policy until December 5, 2022, she allegedly filed an electronic insurance claim on December 21, 2022, stating the loss date was December 21. The claim amount was $2,251.40.

A second complaint involved Progressive Insurance. On September 12, 2023, Knight’s policy was canceled due to nonpayment. According to court documents, Knight’s child was involved in a motor vehicle collision resulting in injuries in Tucker County on September 17, 2023, at approximately 3:25 p.m.

Later that same day, at approximately 11:48 p.m., Knight allegedly filed an electronic statement for no loss with Progressive Insurance and paid $576.36 to reinstate her policy. Special Agent Wyatt noted in the complaint that the statement was material false information because Knight was aware of the collision involving her child. A claim for $2,136.90 was subsequently made by the mother of the injured party on the policy Knight had allegedly fraudulently obtained.

A third complaint was filed by Wyatt regarding an incident occurring on May 3, 2024.
