Online brokerage platform Robinhood announced plans at the HOOD Summit in Houston on 29 (local time) to introduce round-the-clock trading for select U.S. equities seven days a week, alongside artificial intelligence automated trading tools and cryptocurrency perpetual futures. The expansion moves the platform beyond its current 24/5 trading model to offer weekend access, as retail brokerages increasingly compete on market accessibility, speed, and automation rather than commission-free pricing alone.
Expanding to Seven-Day Equities Trading
Robinhood plans to roll out 24/7 trading for select U.S. stocks starting next year, enabling users to execute trades over the weekend. The firm currently operates a 24/5 schedule introduced in 2023, which permits trading from Sunday at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time through Friday at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
By extending this access to weekends, Robinhood aims to attract highly active retail traders. Industry competition has shifted from zero-commission stock transactions toward providing continuous market access and automated execution capabilities.
We are making Robinhood the best place for active traders all over the world by providing tools that were previously only available to hedge funds, large banks, and quant firms,
said Vlad Tenev, chief executive officer of Robinhood.
Artificial Intelligence Automated Trading Tools
In addition to extended market hours, Robinhood unveiled an AI-powered automated trading feature that allows individual users to build personalized AI agents. Investors can input specific trading strategies into their AI agent, automating parts of the execution process to maintain continuous trading strategies around the clock.
This tool expands upon the agentic trading capabilities Robinhood introduced earlier in the year. Tenev noted during a CNBC interview that while algorithms account for a substantial share of exchange volume following the electronic transformation of financial markets over the past two decades, human-designed strategies remain integral.
I don’t think it’s ever going to be 100% automated, but it opens up a new frontier of capabilities,
Tenev said in the CNBC interview, adding that emerging AI features create new competitive arenas for traders and market participants.
Introduction of Cryptocurrency Perpetual Futures
Robinhood also plans to add cryptocurrency perpetual futures to its application, allowing investors to use borrowed funds to bet on price movements without holding the underlying digital assets. This addition broadens Robinhood’s product lineup beyond traditional equities into derivatives and cryptocurrency trading. This expansion places Robinhood into direct competition with a wider array of financial institutions. Cryptocurrency platform Coinbase has steadily expanded its offerings into derivatives and other financial products, while traditional brokerage Charles Schwab introduced 24/7 trading for select crypto futures earlier in the year on its thinkorswim platform.
