A 1937 Volkswagen W30, the ⁤oldest⁣ known surviving Beetle, has been meticulously restored and continues to be driven today, offering a unique⁤ glimpse into the ⁤origins of a motoring icon.

A History Forged in ⁤Pre-War Germany

Admittedly, there wasn’t much left of it when restoration ⁣work started, but Traugott Grundmann’s Beetle is thought to be the ⁤oldest anywhere in the⁤ world. It’s now on display at his home in Hessisch Oldendorf, ‍Germany. This isn’t a museum piece gathering dust; Grundmann regularly drives ⁣the car, and this author recently⁤ joined him for a road ⁤trip.

“This is driving in its purest ⁢form, back to basics, so to speak,” Grundmann explained as we⁢ drove – “and it’s loud.”

The car was built in 1937 as the ⁢Volkswagen⁢ W30 – still at the⁣ former porsche⁤ engineering office and with support from Mercedes-Benz. It was the frist prototype series for what would later become the VW ⁢Beetle, following three⁤ earlier, now-lost, “V” models.

“These 30 test cars were built⁤ on behalf⁣ of‍ Ferdinand Porsche for a large-scale road test and are considered the direct precursors of the later VW Beetle,” says an expert from TÜV ⁣Nord, Germany’s⁤ technical inspection association.

Hitler’s “People’s Car” and the Shadow ‍of ⁤War

The Beetle was a pet project of Adolf Hitler, who‍ envisioned⁢ an affordable “people’s car” for germany. ‍The W30 served⁤ as a crucial dress rehearsal for the eventual mass ‍production of the VW Beetle. ⁤ Hitler’s ambition ‍was to motorize Germany, ⁤and the Beetle⁣ was central to that plan.

However, the outbreak of World War II dramatically altered the car’s fate. During the war,‍ manny of the W30 prototypes were scrapped for materials, as evidenced by historical photographs in Grundmann’s collection. The chassis ⁢with the number 26 had already accumulated 56,000 kilometers before being sidelined.

Survival and Restoration

According to TÜV, there is no evidence of any other remaining frames or bodies from the W30 series. This makes Grundmann’s car the sole surviving example of this pivotal prototype, and arguably the oldest VW Beetle in existence.

The restoration process ⁣was extensive, ⁤bringing the ⁤car ‍back to a drivable condition. Despite its age,Germany’s TÜV testing authority has certified the car as safe for speeds up to 100 km/h,even though Grundmann admits it becomes “a little bumpy” above ⁤80 km/h.

Experiencing the W30: A Drive Back⁣ in Time

Stepping inside the W30 is a journey back in ⁣time. ‍The interior is undeniably cramped. “People⁤ used to be smaller,” Grundmann notes with a smile. Anyone over 1.80 meters (approximately 5’11”) will find legroom limited, and ⁤even ⁣grundmann has to hunch to see over the steering wheel.

The car is powered by a 23-horsepower, air-cooled engine mounted ⁤at the rear, providing a distinctly raw driving experiance.It’s a far cry ⁣from the modern comforts‍ of⁣ today’s vehicles, but⁢ that’s precisely⁢ its appeal.
