Afghanistan Faces Escalating Humanitarian Crisis

Kabul, Afghanistan – February 17, 2026 – Afghanistan is grappling with a deepening humanitarian crisis, exacerbated by a complex interplay of natural disasters, ongoing displacement, and strained resources. Recent reports indicate a significant increase in humanitarian needs across the country, placing immense pressure on aid organizations and local communities.

The situation has been particularly acute following an earthquake in the eastern region of Afghanistan. This disaster, coupled with a persistent drought affecting 12 provinces, has dramatically increased the number of people requiring assistance. Simultaneously, large-scale returns of Afghan nationals from neighboring Iran and Pakistan are adding to the strain on already overstretched basic services.

According to recent data, 23.3 million people are currently in need of humanitarian assistance. This figure underscores the scale of the crisis and the urgent need for increased support. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that the large-scale provision of humanitarian assistance, particularly food distributions and seasonal support, has continued throughout the first nine months of 2024.

UNICEF has been at the forefront of the humanitarian response, providing critical assistance to vulnerable populations. In 2024, the organization extended essential humanitarian and social cash assistance to 59,447 of the most vulnerable households, reaching a total of 463,685 people. This support included basic needs provisions, reaching over 850,798 children across nine provinces.

The rising levels of acute food insecurity and malnutrition are particularly concerning. Reports indicate that these issues have been increasing for the sixth consecutive year in the world’s most fragile regions, with Afghanistan being a prime example. The growing healthcare needs of the population, especially women, are also a significant challenge.

The humanitarian needs overview and response plan for 2024 highlight the ongoing challenges and the need for a coordinated response. The situation is further complicated by the generation of new needs due to sudden-onset crises, which simultaneously exacerbate existing vulnerabilities.
