Despite persistent fears that artificial intelligence would displace software developers, the latest data from GitHub and Korean labor market research reveals a starkly different reality: AI is not reducing developer jobs, but rather accelerating growth in the sector, especially in countries like South Korea.

GitHub’s 2025 Octoverse report, the company’s annual analysis of global developer activity, shows that the number of developers pushing code to the platform—measured by git push commands—rose by 78% compared to the previous year. In total, developers made nearly 986 million code pushes in 2025, up from 554 million in 2024. This surge coincides with the release of GitHub Copilot Free in late 2024, which made AI-assisted coding tools accessible to millions of developers worldwide. The platform now hosts over 180 million developers globally, with more than 36 million new developers joining in 2025 alone.

According to GitHub’s Innovation Graph, the increase in code pushes reflects not only a rise in the number of developers but also a significant boost in productivity. Developers are creating more repositories and shipping code at an unprecedented pace, with 230+ repositories being created per minute. The data suggests that AI tools are enabling developers to work faster and more efficiently, rather than replacing them.

AI and the Developer Labor Market in South Korea

South Korea, in particular, is emerging as a major beneficiary of this trend. Research from the Bank of Korea (BOK) and industry reports indicate that the demand for AI-skilled developers has surged, with companies actively recruiting talent to integrate AI into their software development processes. A 2025 BOK issue note highlights the growing wage premium for AI professionals, underscoring the high value placed on AI skills in the labor market.

Despite concerns that AI tools could reduce the need for entry-level developers, major Korean IT firms such as Kakao, Naver, and LG CNS are increasing their use of AI assistant tools for development. However, these tools are not replacing developers but are instead augmenting their capabilities, leading to a higher demand for skilled professionals who can leverage AI to build more complex and innovative software solutions.

Industry reports also note that Korean developers with AI expertise are in high demand, with salaries for AI talent rising significantly. While entry-level developers may face some challenges due to the rapid integration of AI tools, the overall trend is one of growth and opportunity. Companies are offering competitive salaries and benefits to attract top tech talent, reflecting the critical role developers play in driving innovation.

What Comes Next

The data from GitHub and Korean labor market research suggests that AI is transforming the software development landscape, but not in the way many feared. Rather than reducing the number of developer jobs, AI tools are expanding the opportunities for developers to create, innovate, and collaborate at scale. As AI continues to evolve, the focus for developers will likely shift toward leveraging these tools to solve more complex problems and build the next generation of software applications.

For companies, the challenge will be to invest in training and upskilling their workforce to ensure they can fully capitalize on the benefits of AI-assisted development. For regulators and policymakers, the data underscores the importance of fostering an environment that supports innovation and continuous learning in the tech sector.

As the global developer community continues to grow, the relationship between AI and software development will remain a key area of focus, with implications for both the industry and the broader economy.
