An Albany man convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl has been sentenced to state prison, according to Albany County District Attorney Lee C. Kindlon.
Mohammed Gubari, 28, was sentenced to 12.5 years in state prison following his conviction on first- and second-degree rape charges after a three-day trial in Albany County Court.
The sentence was announced by the Albany County District Attorney’s office, which confirmed that Gubari will serve his term in a New York State correctional facility.
Prosecutors said during the trial that Gubari coaxed both a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old girl into a vehicle on Central Avenue in Albany before driving them to a dark parking lot where he assaulted the younger victim.
The jury found Gubari guilty after deliberating over the evidence presented during the trial, which included testimony from the victim and forensic findings.
According to court records and statements from the District Attorney’s office, the conviction carries a maximum possible sentence of up to 25 years in state prison under New York penal law for the charges brought.
The case drew attention in the Capital Region due to the age of the victim and the public nature of the location where the assault occurred.
District Attorney Lee C. Kindlon emphasized the office’s commitment to pursuing justice for victims of sexual violence, particularly minors, in public statements following the sentencing.
Gubari will be required to register as a sex offender upon release from incarceration, as mandated by New York State law for individuals convicted of rape offenses.
The Albany County District Attorney’s press office confirmed the sentencing details and noted that the case was prosecuted by the Special Victims Unit within the office.
