The Israeli military launched a massive, coordinated wave of air strikes across Lebanon on April 8, 2026, targeting 100 sites within a 10-minute window. The operation, which the Israeli military identified as Operation Eternal Darkness, resulted in hundreds of casualties and caused widespread destruction across multiple regions, including central Beirut, the Beqaa valley, and south Lebanon.

The strikes began around 2:30 pm, hitting at least 48 different areas. The Israeli military stated that the targets were 100 Hezbollah command centers and military sites located within the heart of the civilian population. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz described the assault as the largest concentrated blow Hezbollah has suffered since the pagers operation.

Humanitarian Impact and Civilian Toll

The scale of the attack overwhelmed local healthcare infrastructure, with hospitals issuing urgent calls for blood donations to treat the influx of wounded individuals. The strikes occurred shortly after the Israeli military had issued evacuation warnings on April 8 for the city of Tyre, the southern suburbs of Beirut, and areas north of the Zahrani River.

Humanitarian Impact and Civilian Toll

In the Salim Salam neighborhood of Beirut, an eyewitness named Fatima described the aftermath of a strike on a building across from her home as apocalyptic. She reported seeing blood and numerous wounded adults and children on the ground, stating that the same scenes of devastation were visible across other neighborhoods.

The April 8 escalation follows a period of intense fighting that began on March 2, 2026. According to Amnesty International, more than 1,500 people had been killed and over one million people displaced across Lebanon prior to the launch of Operation Eternal Darkness.

International Condemnation

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk condemned the strikes on April 8, describing the reports of hundreds of casualties, including civilians, as appalling. Türk characterized the scale of killing and destruction as nothing short of horrific.

Heba Morayef, Amnesty International’s Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, noted that the attacks occurred only hours after a US-Israeli ceasefire with Iran had been welcomed by the international community.

Civilians in Lebanon are already paying an unbearable price with children, health workers and journalists amongst those killed – the latest attacks will only escalate this devastating human toll.

Amnesty International called for an immediate halt to the transfer of arms and weapons to Israel, citing the risk that such weapons would be used to commit serious violations of international humanitarian law.

Legal Concerns and Military Conduct

Amnesty International highlighted the Israeli military’s recent warnings that Hezbollah had repositioned from the southern suburbs of Beirut to the north and other mixed areas of the city, which the organization suggests increases the fear of further attacks in civilian zones.

The organization reiterated that Israeli forces are required under international humanitarian law to distinguish between military objectives and civilians. This includes a requirement to refrain from indiscriminate or disproportionate attacks and to avoid using explosive weapons with wide-area effects in densely populated residential areas.

The report also noted a broader pattern of conduct since 2024, including the Israeli military’s use of white phosphorus and indiscriminate mass explosions targeting electronic devices. Between October 1, 2024, and January 26, 2025, the military extensively damaged agricultural land and civilian structures in southern Lebanon, continuing these actions after a November 2024 ceasefire.

Amnesty International also documented that Hezbollah has engaged in unlawful conduct by firing unguided rockets into populated civilian areas in Israel, resulting in civilian deaths, injuries, and the destruction of homes.
