Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has issued a clear ultimatum to midfielder Sandro Tonali and winger Anthony Gordon amid growing transfer interest from Manchester United and other Premier League clubs.
According to The Peoples Person, Howe has told both players that they must commit fully to the club’s ambitions for the remainder of the season or face potential exclusion from the squad, as speculation intensifies over their futures.
The ultimatum comes as Manchester United are reported to have taken a shock lead in the race to sign Anthony Gordon, with Football365 claiming they have made an £87 million offer for the England international after he was absent from Newcastle’s match against Bournemouth due to a training ground injury.
Gordon, who joined Newcastle from Everton in 2023 and is contracted until 2030, has been the club’s top scorer this season with 17 goals in all competitions, including 10 in European competition. His form has attracted interest from several top clubs, including Bayern Munich, who are reportedly preparing a £55 million bid for his services, as reported by the Mirror.
Yahoo Sports reported that Gordon has already informed people close to him that he wants a move to Bayern Munich this summer, believing that joining the Bundesliga champions would aid his career progression, particularly after observing the development of Michael Olise since his transfer from Crystal Palace.
The Telegraph noted that Gordon is open to leaving Newcastle this summer, with the player reportedly keen to test himself at a higher level and play regularly in the Champions League, a competition Newcastle may miss out on next season if they fail to qualify for European football.
Newcastle are currently six points outside the top seven in the Premier League and must win their upcoming match against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium to retain any hope of qualifying for European competition. A failure to do so could see the club miss out on continental football entirely for the first time since the 2020-21 season.
Bayern Munich’s interest in Gordon is further supported by reports from ESPN and Sky Germany, which indicate that the German champions have made signing the winger a priority, with talks already held with his representatives. Bayern see Gordon as a potential challenger to Luis Díaz for a starting position on the left flank under head coach Vincent Kompany.
Despite the growing interest, Newcastle remain determined to retain their key assets, particularly as they look to balance their finances through strategic sales. The club previously received a significant fee for Alexander Isak’s transfer to Liverpool last summer and may look to replicate that model with Gordon should a satisfactory offer emerge.
For Sandro Tonali, the situation is similarly precarious. The Italian international, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan, has also been linked with a return to Serie A, with Juventus and AC Milan both monitoring his situation. Howe’s ultimatum applies equally to both players, emphasizing that their focus must remain on helping Newcastle achieve their seasonal objectives.
As the season enters its decisive phase, the futures of Tonali and Gordon could hinge on Newcastle’s ability to secure European qualification. Should they fail, the pressure to sell may increase, potentially triggering a summer of significant departures from St James’ Park.
