Apple has moved its first foldable iPhone into a new testing stage that precedes mass production. This development marks a significant step toward the commercial release of a device that departs from the standard slab design of the iPhone lineup.
While the device has been referred to as the iPhone Fold during the rumor cycle, reports suggest Apple may instead name the product the iPhone Ultra
. This naming convention would align the device with the Apple Watch Ultra and the high-integration version of CarPlay.
Design and Display Specifications
The device is expected to feature a book-style design that folds horizontally. When closed, the iPhone will have a display of approximately 5.5 inches, making it the smallest device in the current-generation iPhone lineup.
When opened, the device will reveal a 7.8-inch internal display, which is roughly half an inch smaller than the iPad mini. Apple is reportedly utilizing a 4:3 aspect ratio, a wider design than most existing foldable smartphones on the market.
To minimize the visibility of the hinge crease, Apple is expected to use Ultra Thin Glass (UTG). The chassis is rumored to be as thin as 4.5mm when the device is open.
Hardware and Internal Components
Due to the thinness of the chassis, Apple may omit the TrueDepth camera system. Instead, the device is expected to feature a Touch ID side button for authentication.

The hardware specifications are rumored to include 12 GB of RAM and storage options up to 1 TB. The device may be powered by a battery with a capacity between 5,000 and 5,500 mAh.
The camera system is expected to consist of a dual-lens rear setup and a single front-facing camera. The rear cameras will be housed in a raised bump that does not span the entire back of the device.
The frame is expected to be constructed from a combination of titanium, and aluminum. Titanium will be used for stress-bearing parts to prevent bending, while aluminum will be used in other areas to assist with heat dissipation and reduce overall weight.
Additional construction details suggest a titanium alloy casing with a hinge made from stainless steel and titanium containing liquid metal components.
Software and Ecosystem
The foldable iPhone is expected to run iOS 27, which will be optimized specifically for foldable displays. Reports indicate that the device will not run iPadOS.
Release Timeline and Availability
Conflicting reports exist regarding the exact launch date. Some evidence suggests a release in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series.
Other reports indicate a potential delay, with some suggesting a December 2026 shipping date. While the publication Nikkei reported that production issues could push the launch into 2027, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman stated that this report is off base
.
Gurman believes the device will be available around the same time
or soon after
the iPhone 18 Pro models. However, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has noted that production complexities could lead to supply shortages continuing into 2027.
Pricing Estimates
The foldable iPhone is expected to be a high-end offering that crosses the $2,000 threshold. Some reports suggest a starting price of $1,999, while other estimates place the starting price around $2,000.
Outlier reports suggest that certain higher-end configurations could see starting prices upwards of $2,300.
