Apple is currently testing at least four different frame styles for an upcoming project involving smart glasses, according to reporting from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in the April 12, 2026, edition of his Power On newsletter. The company is focusing on high-end designs and premium materials to differentiate the product from existing competitors, such as the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses.
Unlike augmented reality headsets, these devices are designed as display-free wearable spectacles. They function primarily as an iPhone accessory, relying on a connected smartphone to power the majority of their features. In terms of utility, the glasses are described as a combination of the functionality found in the Apple Watch, and AirPods.
Hardware and AI Integration
The smart glasses will feature integrated sensors, microphones, and cameras. These components allow the wearer to capture personal photos and videos, play music, and receive notifications relayed from their iPhone.
Apple is also integrating AI capabilities into the hardware, including visual intelligence features and an upgraded version of Siri. These tools will enable the glasses to interact with the user’s environment and provide information based on what the sensors detect.
Design and Material Specifications
Apple is evaluating multiple frame shapes to ensure the product appeals to a wide range of aesthetic preferences. The four designs currently in testing include:

- A large rectangular frame, which is reminiscent of Ray-Ban Wayfarers
- A slimmer rectangular design, similar to the glasses worn by Apple CEO Tim Cook
- Larger oval or circular frames
- A smaller, more refined oval or circular option
To achieve a luxurious feel, Apple plans to use acetate for the frames. The company is exploring several finishes, including light brown, ocean blue, and black, with the goal of creating a design that is instantly recognizable.
Market Strategy and Launch Approach
Apple intends to launch several of these designs in multiple colors. This strategy mirrors the 2015 debut of the Apple Watch, where the company released a range of different styles and materials to capture various market segments simultaneously.
By emphasizing superior design taste and premium materials, Apple aims to compete with the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses. The focus remains on creating a wearable that blends traditional eyewear aesthetics with integrated technology, rather than a bulky piece of hardware.
