Apple plans to close its North County Apple Store inside the North County Mall in Escondido, California, this June as part of a broader nationwide closure of three retail locations.

The decision follows what Apple describes as declining conditions at the mall and the departure of several other retailers from the shopping center, which has experienced reduced foot traffic and shifting commercial dynamics in recent years.

Employees at the Escondido location will be transferred to nearby Apple stores to continue their roles, according to a company statement provided to local news outlets.

Apple confirmed that four additional stores remain open across San Diego County, including locations at The Forum Carlsbad, Otay Ranch Town Center in Chula Vista, Fashion Valley Mall in Mission Valley, and Westfield UTC in La Jolla.

The closures extend beyond California, with Apple also shutting down stores in Trumbull, Connecticut and Towson, Maryland as part of the same initiative.

A company spokesperson told CBS 8 that the move reflects Apple’s ongoing effort to evaluate retail locations based on customer needs and performance standards, emphasizing that the closures are not indicative of broader struggles but rather a strategic optimization of its footprint.

“We’ve made the difficult decision to close our stores at these locations,” the spokesperson said, citing changing mall conditions and the need to align retail presence with evolving consumer patterns.

University of San Diego Economics Professor Alan Gin characterized the decision as a routine business adjustment, noting that Apple continues to open new stores both nationally and worldwide while closing underperforming locations.

Despite the closure, Apple reiterated that customers can access support and services through its website, mobile app, and authorized service providers, ensuring continued availability of assistance even without a physical store in Escondido.

The North County Mall, now known as The Shops at North County, has faced financial challenges and ownership changes in recent years, contributing to the exit of multiple national retailers and a decline in overall tenancy.

Apple emphasized that it remains committed to investing in new and redesigned stores globally, even as it streamlines its presence in certain regional markets affected by shifting retail landscapes.
