Austin Legislator Outraises Senator John Cornyn
- Democratic nominee James Talarico has raised $27 million during the first three months of 2026 in his campaign for the U.S.
- The fundraising total for the Austin-based state legislator significantly exceeds the amount raised by the incumbent Republican U.S.
- The figures further surpass previous Democratic efforts in Texas.
Democratic nominee James Talarico has raised $27 million during the first three months of 2026 in his campaign for the U.S. Senate in Texas. According to his campaign, this total represents the largest sum ever raised by a U.S. Senate candidate in any state during the first quarter of an election year.
The fundraising total for the Austin-based state legislator significantly exceeds the amount raised by the incumbent Republican U.S. Senator John Cornyn during the same period. Talarico’s financial haul is also higher than that of other Democrats in competitive Senate races this cycle, including Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia.
The figures further surpass previous Democratic efforts in Texas. Talarico more than doubled the first-quarter totals of former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, former Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, and former Alaska Representative Mary Peltola. He also outpaced the first-quarter fundraising of previous Texas Democratic Senate candidates who won their primaries, such as Colin Allred, who raised over $9.5 million in the first quarter of 2024, and Beto O’Rourke, who raised $6.7 million in 2018.
Campaign Strategy and Financial Goals
The substantial funding is intended to support Talarico’s effort to become the first Democrat to win a statewide race in Texas in more than three decades. Campaign officials noted that the state’s size and the presence of 20 different media markets make such a bid an expensive undertaking.

Seth Krasne, the campaign manager for Talarico, stated that the grassroots fundraising puts the movement in a strong position to communicate their message across some of the most expensive media markets in the country, noting that winning in Texas will require unprecedented resources
.
The surge in contributions occurred while Talarico was engaged in a competitive primary against U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett of Dallas, a contest he won on March 3, 2026.
Political Context in Texas
The fundraising milestone comes amid a broader political climate in Texas marked by tensions between Democratic and Republican officials. Recent confrontations have occurred between incumbent Senator John Cornyn and other Democratic leaders over federal funding issues.
On March 16, 2026, Representative Greg Casar, chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, confronted Senator Cornyn at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The exchange centered on a partial government shutdown that began on February 14, 2026, which has left Transportation Security Administration employees without pay for a month.
The shutdown resulted from a partisan dispute over immigration enforcement. While Senate Republicans have attempted to advance a House-passed bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security, Democrats have withheld support unless the White House provides concessions regarding the tactics used by federal immigration agents.
The financial resources gathered by Talarico’s campaign are expected to play a key role as he attempts to flip the Texas Senate seat in the 2026 election cycle.
