Shield AI, a developer of autonomous military technology, announced on March 26, 2026, that it is raising $2 billion in new capital and plans to acquire Aechelon Technology Inc., a defense software company specializing in high-fidelity simulation.
The funding consists of $1.5 billion in Series G funding and $500 million in fixed-return preferred equity financing. This capital injection places the company at a post-money valuation of $12.7 billion.
Funding Details and Investors
The Series G round was led by Advent International and co-led by the Strategic Investment Group of JPMorganChase’s Security and Resiliency Initiative. Other participating investors include Snowpoint Ventures, InnovationX, Riot Ventures, Disruptive, and Apandion.
Blackstone managed funds provided the $500 million in preferred equity financing. Blackstone has committed a $250 million delayed draw facility to support the future growth of the company.
As a result of these investments, David Mussafer, Chairman of Advent, will join Shield AI’s Board of Directors. Todd Combs of JPMorganChase will join the company as a Board Observer.
Acquisition of Aechelon Technology
A portion of the newly raised proceeds will be used to fund the acquisition of Aechelon Technology Inc., which is currently a portfolio company of Sagewind Capital.
Aechelon is recognized for its development of physics-based sensors, synthetic reality applications, and high-fidelity simulation software. Its technology is utilized by the U.S. Military and its allies to test autonomous systems and advanced aircraft before they enter live flight.
Aechelon’s software supports several critical national security platforms, including the Joint Simulation Environment (JSE) of the Pentagon.
The integration of Aechelon is intended to connect the training of systems with their actual performance in the field, combining simulation with autonomy and aircraft hardware.
Strategic Context of the Merger
The acquisition addresses the technical requirements of next-generation defense, where capabilities are increasingly developed through software and improved via simulation.
Simulation allows for the testing of drone software without the risk of damaging physical hardware if a system crashes during the testing phase.
By acquiring a dedicated simulation maker, Shield AI aims to refine how autonomous military technology is trained and deployed, reflecting a shift toward software-shaped defense capabilities.
