BMW has unveiled a China-specific electric SUV, the iX3 Long Wheelbase, as part of a localized strategy to compete within the world’s largest electric vehicle market. The vehicle, produced under the BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture, is scheduled for a global debut at the Auto China 2026 exhibition in April 2026.
The new model is designed to address specific regional preferences and regulatory requirements. According to company details, the vehicle is set for launch in China during 2026, with different sources citing either the first half or the second half of the year.
Localized Engineering and Dimensions
A primary feature of the China-specific model is its extended wheelbase, which measures 3,005mm. This is an increase from the overseas model’s wheelbase of 2,895mm, a modification intended to enhance rear passenger comfort and support executive transport use cases.
For comparison, the overseas model dimensions are 4,780mm in length, 1,895mm in width, and 1,635mm in height. The China-produced variant retains much of the exterior design of the global model but introduces specific refinements, including Digital Angel Wing
daytime running lights and a 3D Luminous Grille
.
The vehicle will be available in nine body colors: Mineral White, Arctic Grey, Marina Bay Blue, Space Silver, Blue Ridge Mountain, Carbon Black, Dune Grey, Flamenco Red, and Frozen Space Silver. The local production is identified by Brilliance BMW
and iX350L
badging.
Technical Specifications and Range
The iX3 Long Wheelbase utilizes a dual motor setup and a 108 kWh battery pack. BMW claims the vehicle achieves a driving range exceeding 900 km under the China Light-duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) standard.

The SUV is built on an 800-volt architecture, which allows for ultra-fast charging capabilities. The vehicle integrates Momenta’s full-scene navigation-assisted driving function, which is designed for both urban roads and highway travel within China.
Regulatory Compliance and Safety
The development of the iX3 Long Wheelbase includes significant adjustments to meet new Chinese safety regulations and engineering standards. A key focus has been the implementation of a triple redundancy door access system.
This system includes three distinct mechanisms to ensure passenger egress in emergency scenarios:
- Direct high voltage supply
- A backup battery
- A mechanical fail-safe mechanism
These safety features, along with redesigned door handles, are specifically engineered to align with evolving national safety frameworks in China.
Market Strategy
The launch of the iX3 Long Wheelbase represents BMW’s most localized product effort to date. By combining extended dimensions, a high-capacity battery, and China-tailored software, the automaker aims to regain ground against rapidly advancing domestic Chinese brands and other rivals such as Tesla.
The vehicle also incorporates a new central rear camera integrated into the segmented roof spoiler to support its advanced driver-assistance capabilities.
