Boise State Prepares for Rematch with UNLV
Boise, Idaho – The Boise State men’s basketball team returns to ExtraMile Arena on Friday night to face UNLV in a Mountain West Conference matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Mountain time.
The Broncos (15-9, 7-6) are coming off a bye week following a narrow 91-90 road victory over New Mexico last weekend. Boise State has won six of its last seven games.
“I think it was much-needed,” Boise State head coach Leon Rice said, referring to the break in the schedule. “Because of the grind of the season and the travel and all the stuff you have to do, and the game after game after game … that’s cumulative. But probably the most important thing is we had a lot of sick guys.”
Starting guard RJ Keene II missed the New Mexico game due to illness, while forward Andrew Meadow played through feeling unwell. Several other players also reportedly experienced illness, prompting the team to use the time off to recover.
“Then it spread to a few more guys, so we were really fortunate to have some time off to get everybody healthy and get everybody back on the court,” Rice added.
UNLV (12-12, 7-6) enters the game having won its previous two home contests against Grand Canyon and San Jose State. However, the Rebels previously defeated Boise State earlier this season in overtime, 89-85, at Thomas & Mack Center in January.
In that first meeting, UNLV junior guard Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn led all scorers with 33 points, along with six assists and five rebounds. Rice described UNLV as a “really, really talented team,” praising their athleticism and ability to make impressive plays.
“When you watch them on film, you’re like ‘Holy cow!’ They have a lot of those moments where you’re like ‘Wow,’” Rice said. “You saw those (during the first meeting). That play they made at the end of the game to block (Aginaldo Neto’s) shot, there’s not many players in the country who could’ve made that play.”
Gibbs-Lawhorn currently averages 18.7 points per game for the Rebels.
Boise State will be looking to split the season series with UNLV on their home court. The game will be broadcast live, offering fans the opportunity to watch the matchup unfold at ExtraMile Arena.
