Several Brazilian municipalities are intensifying public health initiatives to increase vaccination rates and expand medical access for marginalized populations. These efforts include targeted campaigns against influenza and the implementation of specialized street-based healthcare services to reach vulnerable residents.

In Feira de Santana, the Municipal Health Secretariat (SMS) has reinforced its vaccination campaign against influenza. This push follows a reported increase in flu cases alongside a decrease in Covid-19 cases. Local authorities have already administered more than 17,000 doses of the flu vaccine.

Similarly, the municipality of Estrela has set a target to vaccinate 90 percent of its priority population against influenza.

Expanding Access to Vulnerable Populations

Beyond seasonal influenza, local governments are focusing on reaching populations that traditionally face barriers to healthcare. In Suzano, health services have begun administering vaccines for four different diseases specifically to people experiencing homelessness.

Alagoinhas is further expanding health access through the implementation of the Consultório na Rua (Street Clinic), a program designed to bring primary care directly to those living on the streets.

Addressing Systemic Vaccine Disparities

These local initiatives align with broader research regarding the challenges of vaccine distribution in Brazil. A study published on November 10, 2023, in PLOS Global Public Health assessed geographic, socioeconomic and demographic disparities in Covid-19 vaccination coverage over the first two years of the campaign.

The research, authored by Antonio Fernando Boing and colleagues, analyzed data from the National Immunization Program Information System to determine how certain municipalities were left behind in vaccine coverage. The findings highlighted a divide in how vaccines reached different regions and socioeconomic groups.

The effort to reach homeless populations and the deployment of street clinics represent direct attempts to mitigate the types of demographic and socioeconomic gaps identified in such public health research.

National Trends in Vaccine Recovery

The current focus on expanding coverage follows a period of fluctuating vaccine trust, and accessibility. Reports from February 12, 2024, indicate successes in restoring high vaccine coverage in specific regions. For example, the state of Espírito Santo saw an increase in meningococcal vaccine coverage, rising from 75.9 percent to 89.9 percent, while Rondônia also showed progress in its vaccination efforts.

Public health experts have noted that Brazil’s ability to maintain the authority of its health institutions is critical, especially when facing political polarization or disinformation. Historically, Brazilians maintained high levels of trust in vaccines, a foundation that community groups and business leaders have worked to support when government messaging became contradictory.

The integration of localized efforts—such as the flu campaigns in Feira de Santana and the street clinics in Alagoinhas—serves as a mechanism to preserve the reach of the national public health system despite fragmented political environments.
