Authorities in the Bahamas face a deadline of Monday evening, April 13, 2026, to decide whether to charge Brian Hooker, 58, or release him from custody following the disappearance of his wife, Lynette Hooker.
Lynette Hooker, 55, of Michigan, has been missing since Saturday, April 4, 2026. The Royal Bahamas Police Force reported that the couple had departed Hope Town on the Abaco Islands for Elbow Cay at approximately 7:30 p.m. That evening.
According to statements provided to authorities, the couple was traveling to their yacht, named Soulmate, when bad weather caused Lynette Hooker to fall overboard from the dinghy they were using.
Investigation and Arrest
Brian Hooker was arrested on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, in connection with his wife’s disappearance. He was subsequently questioned by police for approximately three hours on Friday, April 10, 2026, at the Central Police Station in Grand Bahama.
His attorney, Terrel Butler, stated that the line of questioning focused on the couple’s personal life and relationship, as well as whether Brian Hooker caused harm that resulted in his wife’s death. Butler indicated that the nature of the interrogation suggests authorities may be considering a murder charge.
Police reports state that Brian Hooker told authorities his wife fell overboard with the keys to the dinghy. He claimed he had to paddle for several hours to reach the Marsh Harbour Boat Yard early Sunday, April 5, 2026, where he alerted individuals who then contacted the police.
Defense and Search Efforts
Brian Hooker has denied any wrongdoing and maintains that he did not cause his wife’s death. His attorney noted that there is currently no evidence or information confirming her death, as her body has not been recovered.
Butler reported that during the police interview, Brian Hooker was emotional and broke down in tears, repeatedly asking for updates regarding the search for his wife.
The attorney also mentioned that Brian Hooker was injured while assisting police in a search of the Soulmate boat on the night of his arrest. He was treated for injuries that included an abrasion after falling into the water.
As of April 13, 2026, the Royal Bahamas Police Force has requested an extension until Monday evening to make a final decision on whether to bring formal charges against the 58-year-old man.
