A Brussels man received a court summons for a parking ticket issued to a vehicle he hasn’t owned in nearly two decades.Ali, who lives on Avenue Scheitler in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, began receiving notices in June 2023 regarding a €20 parking violation. He initially dismissed them as scams.
Ali explained he threw away the first notice because it only mentioned the license plate – GMG-262 – and not the vehicle’s make or model. He disregarded a subsequent reminder, which included a €15 late fee, believing it was a continuation of the scam.
his concern grew only when he received a formal demand for payment and a summons to appear in court in late December.
The issue stems from the fact that Ali sold his car in 2008 and had the license plate officially cancelled on November 7, 2008. Verification with the DIV, Belgium’s vehicle registration department, confirms his claim.
