The 2026 Cannes Film Festival lineup was announced on April 9, 2026, revealing a selection heavily weighted toward international auteurs and arthouse cinema. The official competition will feature 21 titles vying for the Palme d’Or, with a distinct focus on filmmakers from France, Japan, and Spain, who account for 65 percent of the Competition films.
Festival chief Thierry Frémaux noted that the selection reflects a period where studio films have been very quiet
over the last five to ten years. The 2026 edition is light on U.S. Studio presence and contains no studio blockbusters.
U.S. Representation and Competition Highlights
The Competition section includes only one American film: The Man I Love
, directed by veteran indie filmmaker Ira Sachs. Set in 1980s New York, the film is described as a musical fantasia of a city under duress
and focuses on the AIDS crisis. Sachs co-wrote the screenplay with Mauricio Zacharias, and the film stars Rami Malek, Tom Sturridge, Luther Ford, Rebecca Hall, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
Several previous Palme d’Or winners are returning to the festival. Hirokazu Kore-eda, who won the top prize in 2018 for Shoplifters
, will debut Sheep in the Box
, a story following a couple who adopt an infant humanoid robot. Cristian Mungiu, who won the Palme d’Or in 2007 for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
, returns with Fjord
, a drama starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as a couple moving to a remote town in Norway.
Iranian director Asghar Farhadi will present Parallel Tales
, his first feature film since A Hero
, which earned the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2021. Shot in Paris, Parallel Tales
marks Farhadi’s second French-language project following The Past
. The cast includes Isabelle Huppert, Virginie Efira, Vincent Cassel, Pierre Niney, and Adam Bessa.
Other notable directors in competition include Pedro Almodóvar, who will showcase his newest Spanish-language film, Bitter Christmas
, and Pawel Pawlikowski. Pawlikowski, who received the directing prize at the 2018 festival for Cold War
, will compete with Fatherland
, which stars Sandra Hüller.
Out of Competition and Documentary Selections
The festival will also present several high-profile works outside of the main competition. Nicolas Winding Refn is returning to feature filmmaking for the first time since 2016’s The Neon Demon

, starring Sophie Thatcher and Charles Melton.

The documentary category features works from prominent American directors. Ron Howard will present Avedon
