Zendaya has spoken openly about becoming the primary financial supporter of her family from a young age, describing the role reversal and emotional weight of being thrust into adult responsibilities while still a child star.

In a 2024 interview with British Vogue, Zendaya reflected on how her early success led to her becoming the family breadwinner, saying, “I felt like I was thrust into a very adult position: I was becoming the breadwinner of my family very early, and there was a lot of role-reversal happening, and just kind of becoming grown, really.”

She also shared that she sometimes struggles to enjoy career milestones due to the lasting impact of her early responsibilities, explaining, “Now, when I have these moments in my career – like, my first time leading a film that’s actually going to be in a theatre – I feel like I shrink, and I can’t enjoy all the things that are happening to me, because I’m like this [she balls up her fist]. I’m very tense, and I think that I carry that from being a kid and never really having an opportunity to just try shit. And I wish I went to school.”

Zendaya’s mother remained in Oakland working two jobs to support the family while her father moved to Los Angeles with her to manage her early career. As Zendaya’s fame and income grew through her work on Disney Channel and beyond, she gradually assumed the financial responsibility for her household.

Her experience is not unique among child stars. Naya Rivera, in her memoir Sorry Not Sorry, described how her father’s prolonged unemployment after losing his IT job in 2001 left her as the only family member with any income, noting she had “tens of thousands” in her Coogan account during that difficult period.
