Manila, April 20, 2026 – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has indicated openness to postponing the 2026 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) amid growing concerns over logistical challenges and the national government’s reallocation of emergency funds to address an ongoing oil supply crisis.
Comelec Chairperson George Erwin Garcia said in a televised briefing that the poll body is reviewing proposals to reset the election date, originally set for October 2026, to allow for better preparation and to avoid conflicts with national emergency measures. “We are not opposed to a postponement if it serves the interest of free, orderly, and credible elections,” Garcia stated, emphasizing that any decision would require consensus with Congress and local stakeholders.
The statement comes as senators remain divided on the issue, with some lawmakers warning that delaying the polls could undermine local governance and democratic participation at the grassroots level. Others argue that postponement is justified given the redirection of the P16-billion election budget toward fuel subsidies and energy relief programs under the Department of Energy’s oil crisis response plan.
Election watchdog Namfrel has strongly opposed any further delay, citing the need to uphold the electoral calendar and prevent the normalization of postponements as a political tactic. In a public statement, the group warned that repeated rescheduling erodes public trust and disproportionately affects marginalized communities reliant on barangay-level services.
Meanwhile, youth council representatives from the Sangguniang Kabataan National Federation echoed concerns about the impact on youth representation, noting that deferring the polls would extend the term of incumbent officials beyond their mandated three-year limit, creating a governance vacuum in thousands of villages nationwide.
The Comelec has not yet formally requested a postponement but confirmed It’s assessing technical feasibility, including voter registration updates, procurement timelines, and the readiness of electronic voting systems in remote areas. The poll body said it would issue a formal position after consultations with the Department of Budget and Management and the Commission on Audit regarding the use of election funds for non-electoral purposes.
As of April 20, 2026, no official resolution has been passed by Congress to delay the BSKE, and the Comelec maintains that the elections will proceed as scheduled unless a legitimate legal and financial basis for postponement is established through due process.
