Let the Games begin!

It’s officially Day 1 of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games. Several Canadian athletes are set to compete across a range of disciplines, with medal events kicking off today. Here’s a breakdown of what to watch on Saturday, February 7th.

Alpine Skiing

The men’s downhill competition is the first alpine skiing event, scheduled to begin at 5:30 a.m. ET. Representing Canada in Bormio will be Jack Crawford, Cameron Alexander, Brodie Seger, and Jeffrey Read. Crawford demonstrated strong form in training, posting the fastest time in the final run on Friday at the Stelvio Ski Centre. Both Crawford and Alexander have enjoyed previous success at this venue, adding to the anticipation for a strong Canadian performance.

Cross-Country Skiing

The women’s 20km skiathlon is the first cross-country skiing event, starting at 7:00 a.m. ET. Jasmine Drolet, Alison Mackie, Katherine Stewart-Jones, and Amelia Wells will represent Canada. The race format involves 10km in classic technique followed by 10km in free technique. This marks the first time the women’s skiathlon will be raced over a 20km distance at the Olympic Games, aligning it with the men’s event.

Curling

Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant continue their mixed doubles curling campaign with two matches today. They face Great Britain at 4:05 a.m. ET and Estonia at 11:05 a.m. ET. The Canadian duo currently holds a 3-1 record, trailing only Great Britain (5-0) in the standings.

Figure Skating

The team event continues with the men’s short program at 1:45 p.m. ET, featuring Stephen Gogolev for Canada. Following this, the top five countries will advance to the free skate portion of the event, beginning with the free dance at 4:05 p.m. ET. Canada was in fifth place after the first day of competition.

Freestyle Skiing

Qualification for the ski slopestyle event begins today. Megan Oldham, Naomi Urness, Elena Gaskell, and Skye Clarke will compete for Canada in the women’s qualification round at 4:30 a.m. ET. Evan McEachran will represent Canada in the men’s qualification round at 8:00 a.m. ET. The top 12 athletes in each event will advance to the finals.
