Strategic partnerships for Enduring Development
On Wednesday, december 13, 2023, Egypt and Canada formalized three grant agreements totaling approximately EGP 552 million (roughly $17.7 million USD based on current exchange rates) to bolster initiatives in women’s empowerment, food security, and support for refugees. The agreements were signed by Egyptian Minister of Planning and Economic development Rania Al-mashat and Canadian Ambassador to Egypt, Ulric Shannon, signaling a strengthened commitment to collaborative development efforts.
Prior to these new agreements, Canada’s existing cooperation portfolio in Egypt was valued at approximately CAD 40 million (EGP 1.4 billion),with investments spanning economic development,healthcare,education,and climate-smart agriculture.This latest funding builds upon a foundation of ongoing Canadian support for Egypt’s national development agenda.
Supporting Refugee Women and Girls
The “Comprehensive Support for Refugee Women and Girls in Egypt” project, valued at a notable portion of the new funding, will be implemented by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). This initiative aims to improve the social inclusion and protection of vulnerable female refugees in Greater Cairo, Alexandria, Damietta, and Aswan, focusing on enhancing their living standards and access to essential services.
Enhancing nutrition and Healthcare Access
The “Food for the Future” project, a collaboration between UNICEF and the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population, will concentrate on improving nutritional outcomes for mothers and girls. The project will operate in Assiut, Qena, Sohag, Sharkia, Gharbia, Beheira, Cairo, and Giza, complementing existing education and training programs to deliver comprehensive healthcare improvements.
Promoting Gender Equality in Upper Egypt
The “Empowering Women and Adolescent Girls in Upper Egypt (Masarat)” project will target gender equality and reproductive health access in Assiut and Minya. this initiative will be jointly executed by the Ministry of Health and the National Council for Women, aiming to address critical gaps in healthcare and empowerment opportunities for women and girls in the region.
Geographic Focus and National Impact
Minister Al-Mashat emphasized that the projects demonstrate a strategic geographic focus, extending from Upper Egypt to the Nile Delta and major metropolitan areas. This broad reach underscores the commitment to supporting egypt’s national efforts toward achieving sustainable development goals and ensuring inclusive growth across diverse regions.
