Vancouver Canucks centre Elias Pettersson has spoken openly about his commitment to the team despite a challenging season, saying he feels at home in Vancouver and wants to return to elite form this off-season.

Pettersson, who is entering the third year of his eight-year, $92.8 million contract extension, acknowledged that his production has declined over the past two seasons, with point-per-game totals dropping to career lows of 0.70, and 0.69 respectively after a 102-point campaign in 2022-23.

Despite the downturn in offensive output, Pettersson has remained one of the NHL’s most active shot blockers among forwards, leading the league with 108 blocked shots this season while contributing 51 points in 73 games.

Speaking at the Canucks’ year-end press conference, Pettersson emphasized his attachment to the organization and the city. “I like it here, this feels like home,” he said. “I signed here for a reason. We’re in a tough spot, where none of us are happy with the season. We’ve got good pieces here. So, just trying to build it up and try to build a good team.”

The 27-year-old Swede added that he is motivated to improve this off-season, focusing on adjusting his training regimen to regain the elite level he knows he is capable of. “I want to be the best player out there, and obviously that hasn’t gone the way I wanted the last two seasons and a half,” Pettersson said. “Trying to change up my (training), see what felt good, what (didn’t feel) good. Change up my summer training and go from there.”

Pettersson expressed confidence in his ability to bounce back, stating, “I know I have a lot of good hockey in me, and I haven’t shown it, but I’m confident in myself. But (I) will change up my training a little bit with certain things.”

Canucks head coach Adam Foote confirmed that discussions will take place between the organization and Pettersson this off-season to address areas for growth. Foote noted that the team would like to see Pettersson play with more pace and maintain higher energy levels, particularly in back-to-back games.

“Well, there’s a lot going on in our season, as you know, and I’m not going to get back to rewinding everything that did happen this year,” Foote said. “He’ll reflect. We’ll reflect. We’ll have conversations about where can we get each player to another level. Keep getting better, keep grinding. And we’ve had discussions with Petey about certain things and different things, and the communication will keep going, and on the next meeting, talk more about it. We’d like to see him play more pace, for example, and in the back-to-backs, have more energy.”

The Canucks face a pivotal off-season decision regarding Pettersson’s future, given his significant salary cap hit of $11.6 million and the team’s ongoing struggles. While trade speculation has circulated in the media, Pettersson’s repeated affirmations of his commitment to Vancouver suggest he intends to remain with the franchise and work through its rebuild.
