Texas Governor Greg Abbott and officials from Entergy Texas broke ground on April 9, 2026, for the construction of two new power generation stations in Port Arthur, Texas. The projects, named the Legend and Lone Star power stations, are designed to increase energy capacity and provide reliable electricity to meet the growing demands of the Southeast Texas region.
The two stations are expected to produce approximately 1,200 megawatts of electricity, which officials stated is sufficient to power more than 300,000 homes. The initiative is part of a broader effort to support the expanding population and industrial growth in the region.
Strategic Energy Expansion
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Governor Abbott described Texas as the undisputed energy leader in the United States. He noted that the state ranks first in several key categories, including energy and electricity production, oil and gas production, wind-power generation, utility-scale solar, and battery storage.
No state provides more power generation than the great State of Texas. Today, we are expanding that leadership by breaking ground on two new massive power generation stations. We thank Entergy for investing in our state and for powering our future.
Governor Greg Abbott
Entergy leadership emphasized that the scale of growth in Southeast Texas necessitates significant infrastructure investment. Drew Marsh, chair and CEO of Entergy, stated that the region is characterized by a skilled workforce, strong infrastructure, and global reach, all of which depend on affordable and reliable power.
Eliecer Viamontes, president and CEO of Entergy Texas, explained that the demand created by families, businesses, and industries choosing Southeast Texas required the construction of two plants rather than one to effectively drive job creation and support economic development.
Community and Environmental Concerns
While state and company officials highlighted the economic benefits and energy reliability of the project, the development has met with resistance from some local residents. Community members living near the proposed sites in Port Arthur have expressed concerns regarding safety and the potential environmental impacts of the new facilities.

Residents have specifically cited a lack of communication from officials regarding the project’s implementation and the risks associated with the power stations’ operation in their neighborhoods.
Regional Impact
The Legend and Lone Star projects are positioned as critical resources for the long-term future of Southeast Texas. By adding these generation resources, Entergy aims to stabilize the grid and ensure that the industrial growth continuing in the region is supported by a consistent energy supply.
The groundbreaking event included the participation of local officials and community leaders alongside Governor Abbott and Entergy executives, signaling a coordinated effort between the state government and the private utility provider to expand the state’s electricity capacity.
