Former actor Huang Yiliang, now a hawker at Singapore’s Circuit Road Hawker Centre, was taken to hospital on the evening of May 10 after being assaulted at his seafood stall, Old Fisherman. The incident escalated tensions that had already drawn public attention following a viral argument with his neighboring hawker stall owner, a dispute that has now taken a physical turn.
According to The Straits Times, Huang, 64, was preparing orders at about 6pm when he alleged that the husband of the chicken rice stall owner next door called his assistant over to their table, where a confrontation ensued. Huang said he told his assistant to return to work, but the couple continued shouting, attempting to disperse the crowd of customers waiting at his stall. When Huang stepped out to address the situation, he claimed he was struck on his right ear from behind, causing him to fall forward. He was taken by ambulance to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he was treated for pain in his ear and jaw before being discharged with three days of medical leave.
The police confirmed that a 64-year-old man was assaulted by a 60-year-old man, and investigations are ongoing. Huang’s account of the incident comes amid a broader dispute with the neighboring stall owner, who has publicly demanded an apology from Huang for what she alleges were defamatory comments about her relationship status during a heated argument in early April. The argument, captured in a viral video shared on the SingaporeSpeaks subreddit, showed Huang and the female hawker exchanging insults in Hokkien, with Huang allegedly calling her an “embarrassing person” and making comments about her relationships.
Huang has denied the accusations, claiming they were taken out of context. He told The Straits Times that rumors had spread about an improper relationship between him and his part-time stall assistant, which he vehemently denied. The assistant, who declined to be named, confirmed that she had previously rested in Huang’s nearby flat during afternoon breaks, but clarified that she had not slept with him. The misunderstanding arose when the chicken rice stall owner asked her in Mandarin if she and Huang “had slept,” to which she replied “yes,” assuming the question referred to napping.
The incident marks the latest chapter in Huang’s transition from acting to running a hawker stall, a career shift that began in March. His stall, Old Fisherman, specializes in seafood dishes, including stir-fried crab. The public dispute and subsequent assault have drawn significant attention, with many noting Huang’s past legal troubles, including a 10-month jail term in 2022 for assault.
The fallout from the argument and assault has left the hawker community and public on edge, as tensions between stall owners and customers are not uncommon in the bustling environment of Singapore’s hawker centers. The police have yet to make any arrests or issue public statements beyond confirming the assault and ongoing investigations.
