Greek authorities have launched an investigation into the origin and purpose of an unmanned naval drone carrying a significant payload of explosives after it was discovered in the Ionian Sea.
The vessel was found on May 7, 2026, by a fisherman inside a cave near the shores of Lefkada, a resort island on the western coast of Greece. According to reports, the drone’s engine was still running at the time of its discovery.
Following the discovery, Greek bomb disposal experts intervened to render the device safe. Specialists removed the drone’s battery and detonators before transporting the vessel. To neutralize the remaining threat, authorities conducted a controlled explosion of the device in the sea near Astakos.
Official Response and Attribution
Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias addressed the incident, stating that the drone almost certainly originated from a foreign state. While the minister did not explicitly name a specific country, he indicated that the Greek government has a clear understanding of the device’s nature.
In a statement regarding the discovery, Dendias said:
“We know what it is, and we more or less know what it contains,”

The minister also used the incident to address concerns regarding Greece’s maritime security and its ability to defend against emerging military technologies. He asserted that Greece is actively developing its own capabilities to counter such threats.
“We have nothing to envy, we are creating the possibilities so that our homeland can equip its combat navy with the most developed drones and anti-drone systems that currently exist.”

Technical Specifications and Origin
Specialized military teams are currently inspecting the drone for clues regarding its mission and origin. The vessel is suspected to be a Magura drone, a type of unmanned surface vessel produced in Ukraine. This suspicion is supported by reports from Greek and Ukrainian media, as well as the discovery of handwritten notes in the Ukrainian language found aboard the vessel.
The drone was estimated to be carrying approximately 100kg of explosives. It possesses a significant operational range, estimated at 432 miles (700km). Investigators noted that the vessel’s sensors were broken upon discovery, and there are indications that its built-in GPS may have been compromised by adverse weather conditions.
Geopolitical Context and Theories
The appearance of a long-range kamikaze drone in the Mediterranean has raised questions about its intended target. Ukraine has extensively deployed naval drones to target Russian naval bases, tankers, and warships since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, though most of these operations have been concentrated in the Black Sea.
Greek authorities and military analysts are considering several theories as to how the device ended up in Greek territorial waters:
- The drone may have been lost or fallen into the sea while being transported.
- The drone may have been deployed to target Russian shipping in the Mediterranean but lost contact with its operator, causing it to drift off course.
The Ukrainian military has not yet issued a comment regarding the incident. The investigation remains ongoing as Greek armed forces continue to analyze the wreckage for further technical data.
