The Philadelphia Flyers earned a hard-fought 3-2 overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 1 of their first-round Stanley Cup Playoff series on Saturday, April 19, 2026, at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. The win gave Philadelphia a 1-0 series lead and marked their first playoff road victory against Pittsburgh since 2016.

Travis Konecny opened the scoring for the Flyers midway through the first period, deflecting a point shot from Travis Sanheim past Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry. Pittsburgh answered early in the second when Jake Guentzel scored on the power play to tie it at 1-1. The Flyers regained the lead later in the frame when Sean Couturier won a faceoff in the offensive zone and fed Ivan Provorov for a one-timer that beat Jarry glove-side.

The Penguins tied the game again late in the third period when Sidney Crosby intercepted a Flyers pass at the blue line and raced in on a breakaway, beating Carter Hart with a quick wrister to the short side. The goal came with 2:17 remaining in regulation and appeared to shift momentum back to Pittsburgh heading into overtime.

However, Hart stood tall in the extra session, making several key stops including a glove save on Evgeni Malkin and a pad stack on Kris Letang. With 4:32 elapsed in overtime, Flyers forward Scott Laughton drove to the net, drew the defense and kicked the puck out to Joel Farabee in the left circle. Farabee fired a one-timer that beat Jarry five-hole, ending the game and sending the Flyers’ bench into celebration.

Hart finished with 38 saves, including 15 in the third period and overtime combined. Jarry stopped 27 of 30 shots. The Flyers outshot Pittsburgh 38-30 overall and held a 22-10 advantage in shot attempts at even strength, according to NHL official data.

Head coach John Tortorella praised his team’s resilience after the game. “We knew it wouldn’t be easy coming into their building,” Tortorella said. “They came out hard, we weathered the storm, and we found a way to win when it mattered. That’s what playoff hockey is about.”

Penguins coach Mike Sullivan acknowledged the Flyers’ effort but pointed to missed opportunities. “We had our chances, especially late,” Sullivan said. “We couldn’t put it away, and they made us pay in overtime. We’ll need to be sharper with the puck and better in front of our net moving forward.”

The victory was particularly meaningful for Philadelphia’s veteran core. Couturier, now in his 12th NHL season, played over 24 minutes and won 62% of his faceoffs. Laughton, who assisted on the opening goal and scored the overtime winner, has been a consistent two-way presence throughout the postseason push. Farabee’s goal marked his first playoff tally since 2022.

For Pittsburgh, the loss exposed some familiar vulnerabilities. The Penguins surrendered three goals despite outshooting Philadelphia in high-danger chances during the first two periods. Their power play went 1-for-3, while the penalty kill allowed a goal on Sanheim’s first-period point shot. Crosby finished with a goal and an assist but was held to just two shots on goal.

Looking ahead, Game 2 is scheduled for Monday, April 21, 2026, again at PPG Paints Arena. The Flyers will look to build on their road success and potentially take a 2-0 series lead heading back to Philadelphia. The Penguins, meanwhile, must adjust to avoid falling into an early hole in a series where home-ice advantage could prove critical.

With the series shifting to Philadelphia for Games 3 and 4 on April 23 and 25, both teams know the early results could set the tone. For now, Philadelphia leaves Pittsburgh with a valuable win and the belief that they can compete with one of the NHL’s most experienced playoff teams.
