Freddie Hendricks, a middle school theatre teacher at Utopian Academy for the Arts in Ellenwood, Georgia, has been named the 2026 winner of the Excellence in Theatre Education Award (EITEA). The honor is co-presented by Carnegie Mellon University and The Tony Awards to recognize K-12 theatre educators in the United States who demonstrate an exemplary impact on their students and embody the highest professional standards.
Hendricks is the 10th teacher to receive this award since its inception in 2014. He will be formally recognized at the 79th Annual Tony Awards, which are scheduled to take place on June 7, 2026, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
The award includes a $10,000 grant for Utopian Academy for the Arts, as well as tickets for Hendricks to attend the Tony Awards ceremony and the subsequent gala at Rockefeller Center. Students at the academy will receive a visiting master class conducted by professors from CMU Drama later in 2026.
With a career in arts education spanning more than 30 years, Hendricks has long been recognized for his contributions to the field. Prior to winning the award in 2026, he was an honorable mention for the EITEA in both 2023 and 2024.
Community Leadership and Artistic Legacy
Beyond the classroom, Hendricks has established a significant footprint in the Atlanta arts community. He is the founder of the Youth Ensemble of Atlanta, a pioneering African American theatre company. His commitment to community outreach is further evidenced by student partnerships with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center and the NAACP.
The impact of his mentorship is reflected in the success of his former students. Notable alumni include producer-actor Kandi Burruss and sound designer Justin Ellington, who is a 2026 Tony nominee.
Hendricks’ teaching philosophy focuses on the intersection of passion and potential. In a statement regarding the honor, Hendricks said, I am so grateful for this honor. I tell my students, ‘You’re born great. When you find your passion, you’re living in your greatness, and the next step is to be greater,’
adding that he found his own passion through faith and belief.
He further described his personal guiding principle: My mantra is this: ‘Greatness is inevitable when focus marries passion, and the desire is as strong as the need.’
Industry Recognition
The leadership of the organizations behind the Tony Awards highlighted the significance of the EITEA in the broader context of the theatrical community.

For more than 10 years, the presentation of the Excellence in Theatre Education Award has been one of the most memorable moments of our Tony Award ceremony, and this year will be no exception. Freddie embodies everything that this award represents, serving as an inspiration not only to his current class, but to generations of students who have come before
Heather Hitchens, President and CEO of The American Theatre Wing, and Jason Laks, President of The Broadway League
The recognition comes as part of a long-term effort by Carnegie Mellon University and the Broadway community to elevate the role of educators in shaping the next generation of theatrical talent.
