Google is expanding the integration of its Gemini AI assistant into Android Auto, transitioning the in-car experience from traditional voice commands to a more conversational AI interface. The rollout allows users who have switched from Google Assistant to Gemini on their mobile devices to access advanced AI capabilities while driving.
The integration focuses on reducing driver distraction by allowing natural language interactions for a variety of tasks. Users can now use Gemini to manage communications, navigation, and entertainment through voice-activated prompts without needing to manually interact with the vehicle’s display.
Core Functionalities and AI Capabilities
Gemini in Android Auto provides several specific utility features designed for the driving environment. For communication, the AI can summarize incoming messages, add the driver’s estimated time of arrival (ETA) to replies, and translate messages into more than 40 languages.

Productivity is handled through integration with other Google services. Gemini can access Gmail and Google Calendar to find specific information, such as a hotel address buried within an email inbox, while the vehicle is in motion.
For navigation and discovery, Gemini utilizes Google Maps to identify local businesses. Drivers can ask for real-time reviews of spots along their route or request complex searches, such as finding a supercharger located near a sushi restaurant that is currently open.
Entertainment options include the ability to create playlists or engage in brainstorming sessions and learning exercises. A specific feature called Chat Live
allows for free-flowing conversations. By tapping the microphone and saying Let’s talk Live
, users can discuss complex topics like quantum theory or request trivia and jokes.
Technical Requirements and Setup
To utilize Gemini in a vehicle, users must meet specific hardware and software criteria. The requirements include an Android phone running Android 11 or newer with at least 2 GB of RAM. Gemini must be set as the primary digital assistant on the mobile device.
The vehicle must support Android Auto. Once connected, users can activate the assistant using three primary methods:
- Saying
Hey Google
, provided that Voice Match and the wake word are enabled. - Tapping the Microphone icon on the car’s display screen.
- Pressing and holding the voice command button on the steering wheel, where available.
Users can terminate a Live conversation by saying Stop
.
Availability and Regional Expansion
The rollout of Gemini for Android Auto began in late 2025 and is continuing through 2026. While Android Auto is available in over 250 million cars, Gemini’s specific availability is subject to regional and language restrictions.
The Gemini mobile app itself is available in more than 150 countries. Recent expansions of Google’s AI ecosystem include Gemini in Chrome, which as of March 10, 2026, expanded to Canada, India, and New Zealand, adding support for over 50 languages.
For users of the mobile app, age requirements apply: users must be 13 or older, or the applicable age in their country. Those under 13 require parental approval. Access for work or school accounts depends on the specific plan or license, and the app is not accessible within an Android Work Profile.
On Android devices, the app supports phones and tablets, including the Pixel Tablet, provided they have 2 GB of RAM and run Android 9 or newer. Android Go devices are not supported.
