Home heating oil prices have surged to their highest levels since 1996, driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East and a conflict involving Iran. The price spike has contributed to a rise in inflation, with March inflation hitting 3.6% in Ireland.

According to reporting from the Irish Times and the Irish Independent, these prices represent a 30-year high. The Irish Examiner further noted that inflation has jumped to its highest levels in more than two years.

The volatility is characterized by a rapid monthly increase. Data indicates that the price of home heating oil rose by more than 67% in the last month, which has been identified as the largest-ever monthly increase recorded.

Operational Pressures on Energy Suppliers

The surge in fuel costs is creating significant operational challenges for heating oil providers, particularly in New England. Rising crude and diesel prices, tied to Middle East tensions, are squeezing profit margins and disrupting the logistics of fuel delivery.

Andrew Chesney, owner of Southern New Hampshire Energy, reported that the cost of diesel used to fuel delivery fleets has climbed sharply. Chesney stated that a month prior to March 24, 2026, it cost approximately $8,000 to fill one delivery truck; that cost has since risen to between $12,000 and $15,000.

We’re trying to cut corners where we can to save the people money, but it’s hard to also on our end. We’re not making a huge profit at all,

Andrew Chesney, owner of Southern New Hampshire Energy

Chesney noted that the daily cost for Southern New Hampshire Energy to maintain four trucks and procure the necessary oil and fuel is now approximately $50,000. To maintain customer demand, some firms have lowered prices, as consumers are increasingly avoiding auto-delivery services due to high costs.

Market Trends and Consumer Expenditure

The current price volatility follows a cold winter that increased the demand for heating oil, leaving both suppliers and consumers exposed to higher costs. Diesel prices have also trended upward, approaching a recorded average high of $5.816 per gallon seen in 2022.

U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) data from the Winter Fuels Outlook 2025–26 provides a baseline for household expenditures across various heating fuels. In the final estimates for the winter period, average household expenditures for heating oil totaled $1,390, representing an 8% decrease from the previous winter. This total was comprised of the following monthly expenditures:

  • November: $226
  • December: $302
  • January: $341
  • February: $279
  • March: $242

For comparison, the same period saw average household expenditures for natural gas at $642 and electricity at $1,133. Propane expenditures totaled $1,210 for the winter season.

Broader Economic Impact

The energy crisis is extending beyond direct fuel costs. Service price inflation has reached a three-quarter high, attributed in part to fuel cost concerns. The conflict in the Middle East is described by Deloitte as casting a shadow on the global economy.

While delivery firms struggle with margins, some government officials have expressed optimism regarding the future of fuel prices. A Trump administration official stated there is a very good chance that gas prices will return to normal by the summer.
