Hong Kong Man Released on Bail After Alleged Bomb Threat to MTR Station

A 31-year-old man has been released on bail after appearing in court on Monday, charged with spreading false information about a bomb threat targeting the Admiralty MTR station in Hong Kong. The man, surnamed Chung, was arrested on Friday following a report to police on January 27.

Chung appeared at Eastern Magistrates’ Courts, where Magistrate David Cheung granted him bail for HK$20,000. The case has been adjourned to May 5 to allow police additional time for investigation.

As part of his bail conditions, Chung is prohibited from leaving Hong Kong. He is also subject to a curfew and is barred from entering the Admiralty MTR station, according to reports.

Police stated they received a report on January 27 concerning a message posted on a gaming platform, alleging a bomb would be planted at Admiralty MTR station on the first day of the Lunar New Year. Following the report, officers arrested a man in Sha Tin on suspicion of making a bomb hoax and possessing imitation firearms.

During a search of the suspect’s home, police discovered three imitation firearms, along with related components such as magazines and plastic pellets. No bombs or bomb-making materials were found.

Officers from the Counter Terrorism Response Unit and the Emergency Unit inspected Admiralty MTR station but found no suspicious items. Police described the suspect as a “war game lover.”

Under Hong Kong law, a conviction for making bomb hoaxes carries a potential sentence of up to five years’ imprisonment and a maximum fine of HK$150,000. Possessing imitation firearms is punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment.

The incident comes amid ongoing scrutiny of security measures and public safety in Hong Kong. The Admiralty MTR station is a major transportation hub in the city, serving a large number of commuters daily.
