The Israeli military announced on April 4, 2026, its intention to strike an area near the primary border crossing between Lebanon and Syria. The military issued an immediate evacuation order for residents in the vicinity, citing the use of the crossing for military purposes.
The target is the Masnaa Crossing, which serves as a main transit point between the two nations. Avichay Adraee, the Arabic-language spokesman for the Israeli military, stated on X that the operation is necessary because Hezbollah has used the Masnaa Crossing for military purposes and the smuggling of combat equipment.
To facilitate the operation and ensure civilian safety, the Israeli military shared a map marking specific areas in red and urged all individuals within those zones to evacuate immediately.
Regional Responses and Evacuations
Following the threat, a Lebanese security source at the Masnaa border crossing confirmed to AFP that authorities were in the process of evacuating the site.
In Syria, Mazen Aloush, the public relations director for the General Authority for Borders and Customs, disputed the military claims. Aloush stated that the crossing, known as Jdeidet Yabous on the Syrian side, is used exclusively for civilian purposes and is not utilized for military activities.
Due to the warnings and concerns for traveler safety, Aloush announced that traffic through the crossing would be temporarily suspended until potential risks subsided.
Broader Military Context
These developments occur as Israel continues its military operations across Lebanon. Israel has been conducting strikes throughout the country and has maintained a ground invasion in southern Lebanon since March 2, 2026, the date Hezbollah entered the Middle East conflict in support of Iran.
In addition to the threats against the Masnaa Crossing, the Lebanese health ministry reported a strike on Maaraka, located near Tyre, which resulted in five deaths and one injury.
The focus on border crossings follows a pattern of Israeli efforts to disrupt Hezbollah’s logistics. On February 21, 2025, the Israeli military reported striking crossing points on the Lebanon-Syria border to prevent the smuggling of weapons into Lebanese territory, an action Israel described as a violation of ceasefire understandings in place at that time.
During those February 2025 operations, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that an illegal crossing near the Lebanese town of Wadi Khaled, bordering Syria’s Homs province, was put out of service after a convoy of smugglers’ vehicles was observed moving toward Lebanon.
The 2025 strikes also involved reports from Lebanon’s National News Agency regarding aircraft flying at low altitudes over the city of Hermel and villages within the Bekaa Valley in the northeast near the Syrian border.
