Jaylen Sanders, a senior at Howard University, is set to graduate after a community fundraising effort cleared a $57,000 debt that resulted from the cancellation of a federal Parent PLUS loan.
According to reporting by NBC Washington, Sanders was notified of the balance just weeks before he was scheduled to graduate. The financial obligation emerged after his federal Parent PLUS loan was cancelled, leaving the student with no immediate options to resolve the significant balance.
Sanders, a first-generation college student from Lansing, Michigan, was raised by a single mother. During his tenure at the university, he faced personal challenges, including periods of depression that nearly led him to drop out of his program.
Community Fundraising Response
To address the unexpected debt, Sanders launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to seek assistance from the community. The campaign reached and subsequently exceeded its financial goal within 48 hours.
Sanders noted that the support from the community was evident not only in the donations but also in the comments left by contributors, who observed I like that the community’s coming together
and told him Oh, you’re almost there
.
Regarding the resolution of the debt and the support received, Sanders stated, I feel so grateful. It’s hard to even describe right now
.
The clearance of the $57,000 balance ensures that Sanders can now participate in the graduation ceremony and receive his degree, which had previously been put on hold due to the outstanding financial balance.
