Jerry Tuwai, a two-time Olympic gold medallist and former World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year, has been appointed as the new assistant coach for the Fiji Airways Fiji Men’s Sevens team. The announcement was made by the Fiji Rugby Union on April 24, 2026, following a rigorous selection process that attracted numerous local and international applicants.
Tuwai, who previously served as captain of the Fiji Sevens team, expressed his honour at returning to the setup in a coaching role. He highlighted his eagerness to work alongside former teammate and current head coach Osea Kolinisau, with whom he shared significant success during his playing career.
Speaking at the press conference in Suva, Tuwai stated that his primary objective is to help restore the team’s championship mentality and elevate performance standards ahead of a pivotal season. He emphasized that the upcoming year, which precedes the Olympic Games, will be critical for both the players and the broader programme, including management structures.
Tuwai noted that transitioning from player to coach requires a different approach, explaining that his role will involve translating his extensive on-field experience into practical guidance for the current squad. He shared that he has spent recent years pursuing coaching qualifications and development opportunities to prepare for this responsibility.
General Manager of High Performance for Fiji Rugby, Naca Cawanibuka, confirmed that Tuwai’s appointment was a strategic decision aimed at securing the long-term success of the Sevens programme. Cawanibuka highlighted the value of Tuwai’s leadership experience, deep understanding of the Fijian style of play, and proven ability to perform under pressure as key assets for the coaching staff.
The Fiji Airways Fiji Men’s Sevens team is set to compete in several international tournaments during the 2026 season, with the Olympic Games serving as the ultimate benchmark. Tuwai’s appointment signals a commitment by the Fiji Rugby Union to leverage internal expertise and continuity in pursuit of sustained excellence in the Sevens format.
