Apple CEO Tim Cook will step down from his day-to-day leadership role on September 1, 2026, handing over chief executive duties to John Tenus, the company’s head of hardware engineering, while remaining with Apple as executive chairman.

The transition marks the end of Cook’s nearly 15-year tenure as CEO, during which he guided Apple through sustained growth, overseeing the expansion of its product ecosystem and services division while maintaining its position as one of the world’s most valuable companies.

Cook informed Apple’s board of directors of his decision earlier this year, and the succession plan was formally approved in April. Tenus, who has led Apple’s hardware engineering team since 2019, will assume the CEO role effective September 1, bringing deep expertise in product development and supply chain management to the position.

As executive chairman, Cook will continue to advise on major strategic initiatives, represent Apple in high-level engagements, and support the leadership transition, though he will no longer oversee daily operations or executive decision-making.

Industry analysts note that the timing of the leadership change coincides with Apple’s ongoing investments in augmented reality, artificial intelligence integration across its platforms, and expansion of its services revenue stream, which has become a growing contributor to overall profitability.

Cook first joined Apple in 1998 as senior vice president for worldwide operations and was named chief operating officer in 2005 before succeeding Steve Jobs as CEO in August 2011. Under his leadership, Apple launched the Apple Watch, expanded into financial services with Apple Card and Apple Pay, and grew its services business to over $80 billion in annual revenue.

Tenus, a longtime Apple executive, joined the company in 2001 and has overseen the engineering teams responsible for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and wearable devices. His promotion reflects Apple’s emphasis on maintaining tight integration between hardware, software, and services as a core competitive advantage.

Apple has not announced any additional leadership changes beyond the CEO transition. The company’s board of directors will continue to oversee governance, with Cook serving as executive chairman and Tenus reporting directly to the board in his new role.

The leadership transition will take effect as scheduled on September 1, 2026, with Tenus assuming full responsibilities as chief executive officer at that time.
