Renewed Appeal in Search for Missing Icelandic Tourist Jón Jónsson

Irish authorities have issued a renewed appeal for information regarding the disappearance of Jón Jónsson, an Icelandic man who went missing in Dublin in February 2019. The appeal comes seven years after Mr. Jónsson was last seen, and as his family continues to seek answers.

Mr. Jónsson, 41 years old at the time of his disappearance, was in Dublin with his partner to attend the Dublin Poker Festival. According to Gardaí, he left the Bonnington Hotel on Swords Road in Whitehall at approximately 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 9, 2019.

CCTV footage captured Mr. Jónsson walking past the entrance to Highfield Hospital shortly after leaving the hotel, heading in the direction of the Collins Avenue junction. This is the last confirmed sighting of him.

Gardaí have conducted numerous extensive searches and public appeals over the past seven years in an effort to locate Mr. Jónsson. Despite these efforts, his whereabouts remain unknown.

In a statement released today, Gardaí urged anyone with information, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, to come forward. “Even the smallest piece of information — no matter how insignificant it may seem — could assist the investigation,” the statement read. They specifically requested that anyone who was in the Whitehall, Santry, or Collins Avenue areas on the morning of February 9, 2019, or who may have interacted with Mr. Jónsson around that time, contact them.

The renewed appeal follows a recent feature on RTÉ’s Where is Jón? podcast, which detailed the circumstances of his disappearance and the ongoing anguish of his family. The family recently issued a heartbreaking appeal to the public on the RTÉ Late Late Show, pleading for any information that could lead to finding him.

Gardaí are asking anyone with information to contact Ballymun Garda Station at 01 666 4400, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda station. The investigation remains active, and authorities are hopeful that new leads will emerge from this latest appeal.

The disappearance of Jón Jónsson has remained a significant case for Irish authorities, and the renewed appeal underscores their commitment to finding him and providing closure to his family. The case highlights the challenges faced in missing persons investigations, and the importance of public assistance in bringing such cases to a resolution.
