The Korean Dental Education Evaluation Institute held its fifth expanded workshop on March 25, 2026, focusing on strengthening quality assurance in dental education through updated accreditation standards and evaluation methodologies.

The workshop, hosted by the institute under the leadership of President Seo Jeong-taek, brought together educators, administrators and quality assurance professionals from dental schools across South Korea to review and refine the national framework for assessing dental education programs.

According to the institute’s official announcement, the discussions centered on revising accreditation criteria to better align with evolving clinical competencies, patient safety requirements, and advancements in dental technology. Participants examined how evaluation indicators could more effectively measure both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in preclinical and clinical training environments.

President Seo emphasized that the goal of the workshop was not merely to update standards but to foster a culture of continuous improvement in dental education. He stated that the institute aims to ensure that graduates possess not only technical proficiency but also the ethical judgment and communication skills necessary for modern dental practice.

The institute reported that feedback from the workshop will inform the next revision of its accreditation manual, which serves as the primary benchmark for evaluating dental education programs nationwide. The updated guidelines are expected to place greater emphasis on outcomes-based assessment, including graduate performance in licensure examinations and clinical practice settings.

In addition to standards reform, the workshop addressed strategies for enhancing the consistency and objectivity of site visits conducted by evaluation teams. Training modules for evaluators were discussed, with a focus on reducing variability in judgments and increasing transparency in the evaluation process.

The Korean Dental Education Evaluation Institute, established to oversee the quality of dental education in South Korea, conducts regular assessments of all accredited dental schools. Its accreditation status is required for institutions to maintain eligibility for government funding and for graduates to qualify for national licensure examinations.

This fifth expanded workshop marks a continued effort by the institute to modernize its evaluation system in response to feedback from academic institutions and healthcare stakeholders. Previous workshops have led to incremental updates in evaluation tools, but officials indicated that the 2026 revisions may represent a more substantive shift toward competency-based assessment models.

As dental education in South Korea continues to adapt to new technologies such as digital dentistry, laser treatments, and computer-guided implantology, the evaluation institute faces the challenge of ensuring that educational standards keep pace with clinical innovation while maintaining rigorous academic foundations.

The institute plans to release a draft of the revised accreditation standards for public comment later in 2026, followed by pilot testing in select dental schools before full implementation. Stakeholders will be invited to provide input through online forums and regional consultation sessions.
