Professional men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia has agreed to represent Malaysia in the 2026 Thomas Cup campaign without setting any conditions, the Badminton Association of Malaysia confirmed. The Paris Olympic Games bronze medallist had faced criticism over claims he was seeking compensation in the form of image rights fees as a professional player. However, in a show of commitment to ending Malaysia’s 34-year wait for the Thomas Cup title, Zii Jia has agreed to set those matters aside and waive his image rights fee to represent the country.
“This proves with great pleasure to announce that Lee Zii Jia has reached an agreement with the Badminton Association of Malaysia to be part of Malaysia’s 2026 Thomas Cup squad,” stated Team LZJ in a release on Monday, February 23, 2026. “Zii Jia has also agreed to waive his image rights fee in order to represent the country at the upcoming Thomas Cup, reflecting his commitment and dedication to Malaysia.”
The Finals will be held in Horsens, Denmark, from April 24 to May 3, 2026. Zii Jia expressed his appreciation to the BAM leadership, specifically president Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Aziz and performance committee chairman Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei, for placing their trust in him to assist Malaysia’s Thomas Cup mission.
“He would like to take this opportunity to express his sincere appreciation to BAM for the trust and confidence placed in him to contribute to the nation,” the statement added. “We hope this marks a new dawn for Zii Jia and BAM, moving forward together in the best interest of Malaysian badminton.”
Despite injury woes that have limited his playing time over the past season and a half, Zii Jia will make his latest return to top-level badminton at the BWF Thomas Cup Finals 2026. The world championship in the men’s team event marks his continued commitment to national duty following his Olympic bronze medal achievement in Paris 2024.
As of April 14, 2026, Zii Jia holds a world ranking of 82, having previously reached a career-high ranking of 2 on October 25, 2022. His career record stands at 318 wins and 153 losses since turning professional in 2016.
